Brantley's 2017 Game-by-Game Numbers & Notes

hey, Brantley fans! the final numbers are in! well actually, they've been in, but i've had such a busy schedule lately that couldn't write much until now. my apologies!😳

if you're a long-time reader of All Things Brantley, All Things Tribe, then you know that i like to post a series of wrap up blogs when presenting Michael's yearly numbers. i prefer to do it this way in order to keep things more organized and cut down on the length, because my posts can get pretty long and wordy.🕮

as usual, i'm starting with a blog that mainly focuses on Michael's 2017 Game-by-Game numbers and notes.🖩📓

coming into 2017, the biggest question on everyone's mind was if Michael's right shoulder and biceps were going to be okay. the second biggest question was if Michael could get back to being the player he was in 2014 and 2015. happily, the answers to those inquiries were yes and yes! Michael was a little behind in spring training while he continued to finish his rehab work and progressions following his biceps tenodesis (surgery) from August 2016, but he did manage to
get into some Cactus League games with the Indians and ultimately was on the Opening Day roster. he certainly looked back and better than ever in the month of April, which was undoubtedly his best month of the campaign, and highlighted by his walk-off double in the Tribe's home opener versus the Chicago White Sox on April 11.

a minor injury issue occurred when Michael sprained his right ankle in a series against the Kansas City Royals on May 7. it wasn't that serious and he only missed one three-game series before he returned to game action. Michael's next break from baseball occurred when he went on the Paternity List on June 16 after his wife gave birth to a baby boy. once his allotted three-day paternity leave was up, we learned that Michael evidently tweaked his ankle again in another early June series against the Royals. because of that, instead of activating Michael, the Indians decided to move him to the 10-Day DL in the hopes that his sprain would go away for good. after running the bases and passing all the tests he needed to pass, Michael came off the disabled list on June 26.

in early July, Michael was named to the 2017 AL All Star Team as an outfield reserve thanks to being voted in by his peers. at the Midsummer Classic on July 11, Michael got two at bats and went 1-for-2, getting his first career All Star Game hit. eight days later, Michael reached another milestone in his career when he collected Major League hit #1,000.

while maintaining a batting average around the .300 mark, things seemed to be going great for Michael--until August 8, that is. in the midst of Interleague play versus the Colorado Rockies, Michael re-sprained his right ankle. he left the game early and was placed on the 10-Day DL once again on August 9. originally referred to as another mild sprain, it turned out that Michael suffered a deltoid ligament sprain and had ankle synovitis. it took him all the way until September 30 to get healthy enough in order to be activated and get a few at bats in the final two games of the regular season.

while more of a success than 2016, this was not the year that Michael expected, as he had to deal with another lingering injury. he and everyone else knew that he was going to receive some extra days off at the beginning of the year to "protect" his right shoulder, but nobody could have ever imagined that something else would sideline him for a significant portion of time. altogether, he missed 72 games this season, though only 60 of those were due to his ankle woes.

with the Indians now playing in their second straight American League Division Series of Michael's career with the squad, he is at least going to take on a pinch hitting role as his ankle continues to get stronger. as/if the Tribe advances, Michael will likely get back to his rightful spot in left field. it means a lot to him, Terry Francona, and Michael's teammates that he can participate in the postseason in some capacity this year. i hope Michael does well and wish him luck!

Michael played in 90 of 162 games this season and had a hit in 70 of the 90 games that he played. he had several hitting streaks in 2017, including a 14-game, 10-game, and 8-game hitting streak, along with a (still active) 9-game hitting streak on the road. Michael also two streaks of 4 consecutive games with an RBI, two streaks of 4 consecutive games with a walk, 3 consecutive games with the go-ahead hit and RBI to break a scoreless tie, 3 consecutive starts with two hits, and a (still active) 9 consecutive stolen base streak.

Michael reached base safely in 78 games. he had an 18-game, 17-game, and 10-game on-base streak this season. in addition, he had an 11-game on-base streak at home and a (still active) 13-game on-base on the road in 2017.

Michael started 87 games and completed 73 games. he played 87 games in the outfield, starting 86 games and completing 72 of those.

Michael played left field in 87 games, totaling 731.0 innings. as the left fielder, he started 86 games and completed 72 of those. he was a defensive switch into left field in 1 game and played 2 innings after a PH appearance. he was subbed out of 10 games after playing a total of 70 innings. he left 2 games early with a sprained right ankle after playing a total of 7.1 innings. he was lifted for a PR in 2 games after playing a total of 15 innings.

Michael was subbed out offensively in 1 game and lost out on 1 plate appearance, but still played a complete game defensively.

Michael was a PH in 3 games and the PH for DH in 1 of those games.

Michael was the DH in 2 games. he started and completed 1 game and was the PH for DH in 1 game.

Michael missed 72 games in 2017. he missed 21 games in the first half of 2017 and 51 games in the second half.

of those 72 games, he missed 60 games due to injury. Michael missed 10 games in the first half of 2017 and he missed 50 games in the second half.

of those 60 games, he missed 50 games with a right ankle sprain and he missed 10 games with a more specifically diagnosed deltoid ligament sprain and ankle synovitis. he missed 57 games while on the 10-Day DL.

Michael was on the 10-Day DL with a right ankle sprain 2 separate times*. of the 57 games he spent on the DL, he missed 7 games the first time (in the first half of 2017) and he missed 50 games the second time (in the second half).

to be more precise, of the 57 games he missed while on the DL, he missed 47 games with a right ankle sprain and he missed 10 games with a more specifically diagnosed deltoid ligament sprain and ankle synovitis.

Michael missed 1 game due to the birth of his child.

Michael missed 4 games while he was on the Paternity List.

Michael had 7 scheduled games off.

defensively, Michael only played in left field. when he began the year, there was some obvious apprehension and caution when trying to make plays. but as the season went on, he gained confidence and made some of his typical outstanding web gem catches, including a couple dives. overall, Michael totaled 135 putouts, 8 assists, 1 error, and 1 double play in 144 total chances. in 87 games, he finished 2017 with a .993 fielding percentage. going into 2018, he will have a streak of 36 games in the outfield without committing an error.
