Brantley's 2018 Game-by-Game Numbers & Notes

hi again, Brantley fans! it's time for my series of wrap up blogs where i break down Michael's 2018 season numbers in a couple different ways, so as not to overwhelm you all with a plethora of stats and information.๐Ÿ•ฎ

i'm going to begin with a post concentrating on Michael's 2018 Game-by-Game Numbers and Notes.๐Ÿ–ฉ๐Ÿ““

for the third straight year, Michael was behind everyone in spring as he was working to come back from an injury. this time his delay was a result of the right ankle surgery that he had in October 2017 for ankle synovitis and a deltoid ligament sprain. Michael spent most of spring training still rehabbing from his surgery while the rest of the Indians played in Cactus League games. in the middle of March, Michael finally got some game action, first with the minor leaguers before "graduating" to playing with his Tribe teammates. but since he only played in three Cactus League contests, it was decided that Michael would open the season on the 10-Day DL in order to continue building up his endurance to ensure that he'd be capable of playing full games right away upon his return.

Michael only missed the first
week of the 2018 regular season, a mere six games, while staying back in Arizona for extended spring. he was activated on April 6, just in time for the Home Opener (likely his last with Cleveland). after rejoining his boys, Michael looked like he hadn't missed a beat. his bat was probably the hottest on the team despite the cold weather, which didn't seem to bother him nearly as much as it bothered a lot of the other players.

Michael's hot streak continued in the month of May. he hit his first career grand slam on May 1. then, 10 days later, Michael hit his second career grand slam. following that, his season high 19-game hitting streak took off, which ran from May 9-30. he acquired enough plate appearances after the game on May 11 to become a qualifying player and at that point, officially boasted the team lead in batting average. his seven home runs and 26 RBI for the month both represented career highs as well.

when the calendar flipped over to June, we saw Michael struggle. in fact, this was his worst month of the year. other than the career high 24-game on-base streak at home that he set on June 23, which later extended to a 27-game on-base streak in July, there weren't many highlights. he was having trouble in several situations, ie. with runners in scoring position, with 2 outs in an inning, against left-handed pitchers, and on the road. his batting average dropped 31 points over the course of June, largely in part from the eight hitless games he accumulated for the month.

July started out much better. he acquired his 500th career RBI on July 4 and scored his 500th career run on July 6 before being named to the 2018 AL All Star Team as an outfield reserve on July 8. clearly, his long hitting streak played a major role in his being selected by his peers, who voted at the beginning of June. and it's a good thing that's when the ballots were cast because had they waited to do it at the outset of July, he might not have been awarded that honor. during the game on July 17, he spent five innings in left field and got a single and RBI sac fly, his first ribbie ever at a Midsummer Classic.

after the All Star Break, Michael had a tough time again. most hitting situations were challenging for him and he was very unproductive overall. he lost his team lead in batting average on July 21 after 71 days since he became a qualifier. he did reach another big career milestone when he played in his 1,000th Major League Game on July 28, but he sadly ended the month on an 0-for-13 slump at the plate.

at long last, Michael turned the corner and got back to himself in August. he broke his slumps, namely with runners on and in scoring position, he was hitting on a more consistent basis, particularly on the road, and, most excitingly, he his first walk-off hit of the season on August 9. furthermore, i noticed that Michael had picked up the pace not only when running the bases, but also when going after balls hit to left field. in addition, he regained the highest BA on the team on August 21 and never relinquished it again.

Michael wrapped up his 2018 campaign much like he started it. he had another terrific month in September average-wise. besides that, he really excelled against left-handers and on the road, which was fantastic to see. he added a second walk-off RBI single to his season resume on September 22, marking the 7th walk-off overall of his career. his only real negative was he did have difficulties batting with runners on and RISP again, accounting for his low RBI total and abnormally high LOB for the month.

September also brought about two extremely minor injuries for Michael, if you can even call them that. he fouled one ball off his left ankle on September 5 and missed one game because of it, and then was removed from one game on September 25 after fouling a pitch off his right calf. a little extra rest and some ice took care of both "ailments" and other than that, Michael was the perfect picture of health. (i๐Ÿ‘told๐Ÿ‘y'all๐Ÿ‘haters๐Ÿ‘so!๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜€)

Michael's year concluded with a 9-game hitting streak overall and 9-game hitting streak on the road. and he finished with the highest average on the team out of six qualifiers by 32 points! he's now held that team high in each of the last five seasons that Michael was a qualifying player, including 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2018.๐Ÿฅ‡

this was Michael's first full campaign since 2015 and all-in-all, it was a pretty good one. the three-time All Star managed to stay healthy and get back to being the dependable .300 hitter with the smooth swing we all know and love. i'm very happy that Michael is finally going to be able to play a big role in the Indians' upcoming postseason because he's injury-free and unrestricted. here's wishing him nothing but the best of luck! go Brant!๐Ÿคž

Michael played in 143 of 162 games this season and had a hit in 111 of the 143 games that he played. he had 51 multi-hit games and 13 three+ hit games total. he had several hitting streaks in 2018, including a 19-game, 16-game at home, 14-game on the road, and several 7-game hitting streaks, along with a still active 9-game hitting streak and 9-game hitting streak on the road. Michael also had 5 consecutive multi-hit games in addition to three streaks of 3 consecutive multi-hit games, four streaks of 4 consecutive games with an RBI, and a (still active) 8 consecutive stolen base streak.

Michael reached base safely in 127 games. he had a 21-game, two 15-game, and two 9-game (the last of which is still active) on-base streaks this season. in addition, he had a career high 27-game on-base streak at home, 18-game on-base streak on the road, 11-game on-base streak on the road, two 9-game on-base streaks at home, and two 9-game on-base streaks on the road, the last of which is still active, in 2018.

Michael started 141 games and completed 112 games. he played 134 games in the outfield, starting 134 games and completing 105 of those.

Michael played left field in 134 games, totaling 1136.1 innings. as the left fielder, he started 134 games and completed 105 of those. he was lifted for a PR in 8 games after playing a total of 54 innings. he was subbed out of 20 games after playing a total of 136 innings. he was removed as a precaution from 1 game after fouling a ball off his right calf after playing a total of 5 innings.

Michael was a PH in 2 games.

Michael was the DH in 7 games, starting and completing all 7 games.

Michael missed 19 games in 2018. he missed 11 games in the first half of 2018 and 8 games in the second half.

of those 19 games, he missed 7 games due to injury. Michael missed 6 games in the first half of 2018 and he missed 1 game in the second half.

of those 7 games, he missed 6 games while on the 10-Day DL as he continued to rehab from offseason right ankle surgery and build up his endurance in extended spring training and he missed 1 game with a bruised left ankle.

Michael got 12 scheduled games off.

defensively, Michael only played in left field. it took him a while to gain confidence and really trust that his ankle was okay before we saw him look like his usual self. eventually he was making diving catch attempts and getting to balls in the corner quickly enough to throw runners out. overall, Michael totaled 221 putouts, 6 assists, 1 error, and 2 double plays in 228 total chances. in 134 games, he finished 2018 with a .996 fielding percentage. going into 2019, he will have a streak of 74 games in the outfield without committing an error.
