Brantley's 2017 #s Through August

okay, so maybe i was on to something when i wrote in the Brantley's 2017 #s Through July blog that this year might need to be a "Just Get Through It" type of season for Michael Brantley. (if you haven't seen it or would like to re-read my theory, it's at the bottom of the post.) except, he's hit a snag in that game plan due to his lingering right ankle sprain, of which the latest status can be found in the DL Updates section of my Brantley's August 2017 #s blog.

Michael will be lucky if he even plays 100 games this year. at no point this season did i ever think that would be the case--until now. in my preseason predictions blog, i assumed he'd accumulate at least 125 games, and that was including some extra off days to give his right shoulder a break. i could never have anticipated that he'd miss so much time because his ankle would give out on him. i know it's not his fault, but i can't hide my disappointment in the situation and i'm sure other fans feel the same. forget about Comeback Player of the Year. at the moment, we just need him to come back, period.😞

so when will Michael return? it's unclear because he has yet to resume running and, according to one of the last August updates from Terry Francona, his ankle still needs to heal. but hopefully Michael will be back sooner rather than later in September so that he can get himself going again and finish out the regular season strong and on a good note, or at least try to, before he and the Cleveland Indians embark on playoff baseball!🤞

since Michael barely played in August, his overall numbers have
not changed very much in one month's time, as you're about to see. this blog contains Michael's 2017 regular season numbers and statistics from April 3 - August 30.

so far in 2017, Michael has 372 plate appearances and 335 at bats in 88 games (731.0 innings). in total, he has 100 hits, 30 extra base hits, 70 singles, 20 doubles, 1 triple, 9 home runs, 52 RBI, 4 sac flies, 47 runs, 31 walks, 3 intentional walks, 2 hit by pitches, 11 stolen bases (9 - 2nd, 2 - 3rd), 1 caught stealing (2nd), 8 GIDP, 50 strikeouts (40 swinging, 10 looking), 23 first at bat hits, 149 total bases, 135 left on base, 135 putouts, 8 assists, 1 error, and 1 double play.

2017 batting average through August: .299 (100-335)

OBP: .358

SLG: .445

OPS: .802

Batting Average Competition

Jose Ramirez's .303 batting average is currently the highest on the team out of all the qualifying players.

Michael's .299 batting average cannot be ranked among Indians qualifiers because, like at the conclusion of June, Michael is no longer a qualifying player. the prerequisite in order to be considered is a minimum of 3.1 plate appearances per game, and he has 2.8. the only difference between now and two months ago is Michael's likely not going to get back to qualifying because he's still gonna be out for the beginning of September and he won't have enough opportunities to build up his PA/G before the season ends. so it seems as though Michael will not be a qualifying player for a second straight year. again, i cannot conceal my utter shock that a freakin' ankle sprain would be his undoing this season.😒

remember when i wrote in last month's Through #s blog that if Michael could reduce the gap between his and Ramirez's batting average to around 10 points once August was done, then he would have a shot to reclaim the highest BA on the team? well, it's crazy how much Ramirez's lead in this race has dwindled. their averages are actually very similar now. recently, Ramirez was even batting under .300 for a span of five days. it's like he was helping Michael out this month or something lol but it doesn't matter because Michael missed too many games in August and is no longer a qualifier, so their BAs can't be measured against one another. had Michael not have gotten hurt though, man i'd love to know what he'd be batting. ugh.😔

The Jay Bruce Factor

i also want to make a quick note here about Jay Bruce. when the Indians traded for him on August 9, he came to the Tribe with some "automatic" team leads. i have that parenthesized because that's not exactly true. see, all his stats that he compiled with the New York Mets do not count when likening his numbers to the rest of his new teammates' numbers so far this year. only what he's obtained while with the Indians will be factored into his rankings among Tribesmen. thus, Bruce is not a qualifier either and will not boast any season team highs with us.

conversely, when comparing his numbers to other players/teams around the league, his total season stats from the Mets and Indians are used, and he's regarded as a qualifying player. where Michael is concerned, if we were to assess innings played by MLB outfielders, Bruce would have him beat because Bruce's overall innings in the outfield for 2017 are considered when doing a league-wide comparison and they are greater than Michael's. on the other hand, if we're merely looking at Indians outfielders, then Michael has more innings than Bruce. it might seem a little weird, but that's the proper way to quantify stats when a player joins a team after a trade.

in summary, Bruce's total 2017 numbers are only ranked around the league, not among the Tribe.

Team Leads and Career Highs

with Michael missing as much time this season as he has, between his 10-Day DL stints in both June and August (plus he's gonna be out another week or two in September as well), it's to be expected that he is not going to have any major offensive team leads outright in 2017.

through August, Michael is tied for the team lead with 4 sac flies.

he leads the outfielders with 731.0 innings and 86 games started. he's tied for 1st with 8 assists and 1 double play. he's also 2nd with 135 putouts and 87 games played.

additionally, he's 3rd on the team with 11 stolen bases.

Michael does not have any career highs through August.

HR:RBI Ratio, LOB, K Rate, and Outs

i was hoping Michael would have double digit home runs at this point, but he doesn't because he only hit one homer right before he went on the disabled list in August. so he's presently stuck at nine. the team leader in home runs remains Edwin Encarnacion with 31. Francisco Lindor has 25, Carlos Santana has 21, and Jose Ramirez has 20 to round out the 20+ list. Michael's nine rank 8th behind Lonnie Chisenhall (12), Jason Kipnis (11), and Yan Gomes (10).

through August, Michael has a total of 52 RBI vs. 135 men left on base. whenever he comes back, my new objective is for him to try to get to 60 ribbies before the regular season ends. i won't be surprised, however, if he ends up with 150 runners stranded for the year. Encarnacion continues to lead the team in RBI--he has 78, while Santana has 70 and Lindor's got 66. Ramirez has 62 and Michael ranks behind him (5th).

(as i clarified above, even though Jay Bruce has 33 total HR and 88 RBI, he's not the team leader in those categories because only his stats acquired while with the Indians are measured against all the other Tribesmen.)

time for the latest HR:RBI ratio. six of Michael's 9 home runs were solo and the other three were 2-run bombs. therefore, 11.5% of his 52 RBI have come from his solo homers, while 23.1% of his 52 RBI have come from all 9 of his home runs.

Michael's K rate so far in 2017 is 13.4% (50 K/372 PA). he currently averages 1 strikeout for every 7.4 plate appearances. despite Michael not playing much in August, i'm glad to see his strikeout rate decrease once again (0.6%) from the end of last month. my only concern is that when he finally reappears in the batter's box, he'll be rusty and revert back to swinging and missing at pitches he should either be taking for balls, or that he'd normally be able to make contact with.😟

through August, Michael has 101 groundouts, 38 flyouts, 31 lineouts, and 19 pop outs versus 50 strikeouts. i really wonder how these numbers would look if he'd played a full month in August and not just the six games. my guess is he'd still have a tremendous amount of grounders and probably not even 50 fly ball outs. he's going to have to make it a goal for next year to get more balls up in the air because the little bit he's gonna play in September won't be enough to change his tendencies now.

Reached Base vs. Left Stranded

with five months of the 2017 season in the books, Michael has reached base a total of 142 times via hits, walks, hit by pitches, fielder's choices, forceouts, throwing errors, and fielding errors. he's scored 47 runs total, nine of which came from his own home runs. he's been driven in 38 times by other players and left stranded 94 times. (once he was lifted for a PR, so i didn't count that here.) when Michael returns, if he's able to get on base, i hope the guys behind him, Jose Ramirez and Edwin Encarnacion i presume, can drive him home more than they leave him on base. they've certainly been hitting well in Michael's absence...

Streaks & Situational Statistics

Michael hit in 69 of the 88 games he's played in so far in 2017 and reached base safely in 77 games. he has 19 hitless games, but still reached base in 8 of those. Michael has 29 multi-hit games, 2 three+ hit games, and 10 multi-RBI games. he has at least 1 RBI in 38 games. in addition, he has 10 go-ahead hits and 12 go-ahead RBI. the Indians are now 49-39 in games that Michael's played in and 27-17 in the games he's sat out/missed.

Michael's had various noteworthy streaks to this point in 2017, including:

--a modest 6-game hitting streak on the road between April 8-22. it began on April 8, then continued from April 17-22.

--a 10-game hitting streak, in which he bat .381 (16-for-42), between April 13-27 (over 15 days).

Michael is currently batting .303 (66-for-218) against right-handed pitchers and .291 (34-for-117) against left-handed pitchers. his RHP average went down a tiny bit, but his performance against lefties has improved. i'm not sure how many southpaws he'll get to face when he returns from injury in September though, and if he's too out of practice, then his final average might not be a true representation of his capabilities.

Michael's hitting .319 (60-for-188) with 36 RBI at home. he has 13 doubles, 1 triple, and 6 home runs (20 extra base hits) at Progressive Field, along with 3 sac flies, 30 runs, 19 walks (3 intentional), 1 hit by pitch, 4 stolen bases (3 - 2nd, 1 - 3rd), 7 GIDP, 30 strikeouts (23 swinging, 7 looking), and 93 total bases while playing 50 out of 65 total home games. he hit safely in 39 of the 50 home games he's played in and safely reached base in 44 of them. he has 11 hitless games at home, reaching base in 5.

Michael's hitting .272 (40-for-147) with 16 RBI away from Progressive Field. he has 7 doubles and 3 home runs (10 extra base hits) on the road, along with 1 sac fly, 17 runs, 12 walks, 1 hit by pitch, 7 stolen bases (6 - 2nd, 1 - 3rd), 1 caught stealing (2nd), 1 GIDP, 20 strikeouts (17 swinging, 3 looking), and 56 total bases while playing 38 out of 67 total road games. he hit safely in 30 of the 38 road games he's played in and safely reached base in 33 of them. he has 8 hitless games away from home, reaching base in 3.

Michael's now batting .283 (26-for-92) with runners in scoring position with 39 RBI through August. breaking it down, he's batting .375 (9-for-24) with RISP and 0 outs, .250 (9-for-36) with RISP and 1 out, and .250 (8-for-32) with RISP and 2 outs. he didn't get many RISP opportunities due to a lack of play in August, but did slightly increase his overall average here.

with 2 outs in an inning, Michael is presently batting .252 (33-for-131). he now has 8 doubles, 4 home runs, 14 RBI, 15 walks, and 17 strikeouts (15 swinging, 2 looking). even in limited time prior to his ankle sprain, he continued to struggle with 2 outs and decreased his BA further.

additionally, he's hitting .316 (50-for-158) with 46 RBI with runners on base and .200 (1-for-5) with 4 RBI with the bases loaded so far this season. there was a minor improvement with runners on, but Michael did not bat with the bases loaded in August, so that average remains uninspired.

lastly, Michael's hitting .282 (50-for-177) with the bases empty right now. he has 10 doubles, 6 home runs, 6 RBI, 14 walks, and 28 strikeouts (24 swinging, 4 looking).

through the first five months of the season, Michael has a 1.5 fWAR (wins above replacement), a 110 wRC+ (weighted runs created plus--the ability to create runs compared to the league average), a 4.2 BsR (baserunning runs above average with stolen bases and caught stealings), and -2.6 UZR (ultimate zone rating). none of these stats currently rank among the 13 qualifying American League left fielders because Michael is not a qualifier at this time. [these stats all came courtesy of fangraphs.com.]

Versus AL Central Division Teams

vs. the Minnesota Twins, Michael's batting .333 (8-for-24) in 6 games--3 of the 10 on the road and 3 of the 6 at home. (he missed 10 games/3 series against this team so far. he missed all 4 games in one June road series because he was with his wife following the birth of their child and on the Paternity List; he missed all 3 games in one June home series because he was on the 10-Day DL with a right ankle sprain, but had just begun running on the treadmill/drills in the outfield; and he missed all 3 games in one August road series because he was on the 10-Day DL with a right ankle sprain for the second time this year, wearing a walking boot and still in the healing stages at this time.) the Indians are 4-2 in the games he's played in and 6-4 in the games he did not play in. overall, Michael has 6 singles and 2 extra base hits, including 1 double and 1 home run, to go along with 3 RBI, 4 runs, 3 walks, 1 hit by pitch, 3 first at bat hits, and 12 total bases. additionally, he has 2 strikeouts (1 swinging, 1 looking) and 14 runners left stranded. furthermore, he has a .429 OBP, .500 SLG, and .929 OPS. he's played 52 innings in left field, but only 4 complete games because he was subbed out defensively after 8 innings in 1 game in April following getting hit on the right shin, and he was lifted for a pinch runner in the bottom of the 8th inning in 1 game in May. he's also recorded 13 putouts.

vs. the Kansas City Royals, Michael's batting .375 (12-for-32) in 8 games--5 of the 9 on the road and 3 of the 6 at home. (he had 1 scheduled day off during one June road series. he missed 6 games/2 series against this team so far. he missed all 3 games in one August road series because he was still on the 10-Day DL with a right ankle sprain for the second time this year, wearing a walking boot for most of the time, but doing some light baseball activities; and he missed all 3 games in one August home series because he was still on the 10-Day DL with a right ankle sprain for the second time, out of the boot, back throwing and hitting, but not cleared to resume running.) the Indians are 3-5 in the games he's played in and 6-1 in the games he did not play in. overall, Michael has 11 singles, 1 extra base hit--a double, 2 RBI, 2 runs, 1 walk, 2 stolen bases (2nd), 2 first at bat hits, and 13 total bases. besides that, he's grounded into 1 double play, struck out 6 times (5 swinging, 1 looking), and left 7 runners on base. furthermore, he has a .394 OBP, .406 SLG, and .800 OPS. as the left fielder, he's played 62 innings, but only 6 complete games because he left 1 game early in May after 3 innings following spraining his right ankle, and he was lifted for a pinch runner in the top of the 8th inning in 1 game in June because the Indians were losing a blowout and Terry Francona wanted to give him some extra rest. he's totaled 15 putouts as well.

vs. the Detroit Tigers, Michael's batting .275 (11-for-40) in 11 games--5 of the 6 at home and 6 on the road. (he had 1 scheduled day off during one April home series.) the Indians are 6-5 in the games he's played in and lost the game he did not play in. overall, Michael has 9 singles, 2 extra base hits--doubles, 6 RBI, 1 sac fly, 6 runs, 5 walks (1 intentional), 2 stolen bases (3rd), 1 first at bat hit, and 13 total bases. he's also grounded into 2 double plays, struck out 4 times (3 swinging, 1 looking), and left 19 men on base. furthermore, he has a .348 OBP, .325 SLG, and .673 OPS. defensively, he's played 92 innings, but only 10 complete games in left field because he was subbed out defensively after 5 innings in 1 game in July because the Indians were winning a blowout. he's also totaled 18 putouts.

vs. the Chicago White Sox, Michael's batting .286 (12-for-42) in 10 games--6 at home and 4 of the 6 on the road. (he had 2 scheduled days off: one during an April road series and one during a July road series.) the Indians are 7-3 in the games he's played in and 0-2 in the games he did not play in. overall, Michael has 5 singles and 7 extra base hits, including 4 doubles and 3 home runs, as well as 8 RBI, 1 sac fly, 5 runs, 2 walks (1 intentional), 1 stolen base (2nd), 1 caught stealing (2nd), 5 first at bat hits, and 25 total bases. he also has 9 strikeouts (8 swinging, 1 looking) and 18 men left on base. furthermore, he has a .311 OBP, .595 SLG, and .906 OPS. while playing left field, Michael's recorded 16 putouts, 3 assists, and 1 error in 89 innings, but only 9 complete games because he was subbed out defensively after 7 innings in 1 game in July because the Indians were winning a blowout.

Interleague Play

the Indians have played a total of 20 games against six National League teams through August. Michael has played in 17 of those games. the Indians went 5-12 in the games he played in and 1-2 in the games he did not play in. overall, Michael bat .267 (16-for-60) in Interleague Play in 2017. (there are no more Interleague matchups on the schedule this year, not unless the Tribe makes it to the World Series again.😉) he's done worse in previous years, so i'll take this performance from him.

vs. the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field (no designated hitter allowed), Michael bat .167 (1-for-6) in 2 of the 3 road games in April. (he had 1 scheduled day off during the series.) the Indians went 0-2 in the games he played in and lost the game he did not play in as well. Michael's lone hit was a single, but he also had 1 RBI, 1 walk, 1 stolen base (2nd), and 1 total base. in addition, he struck out swinging once and left 3 men on base. furthermore, he had a .286 OBP, .167 SLG, and .452 OPS. in the field, Michael played 16 innings/2 complete games in left and recorded 3 putouts. (note: he was subbed out offensively in the top of the 9th inning in 1 game, depriving him of one more plate appearance.)

vs. the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park (no designated hitter allowed) and Progressive Field, Michael bat .286 (4-for-14) in 4 games--2 road games and 1 home game in May, and 1 home (makeup) game in July. the Indians went 2-2 in the games he played in. overall, he had 3 singles, 1 extra base hit--a double, 2 RBI, 1 sac fly, 2 runs, 3 walks, and 5 total bases. he also had 3 strikeouts swinging and left 7 runners on base. furthermore, he had a .389 OBP, .357 SLG, and .746 OPS. in the field, Michael played 35 innings/4 complete games in left and recorded 11 putouts.

(he missed 1 game because he was just placed on the 10-Day DL with a right ankle sprain for the second time this year.) the Indians went 1-2 in the games he played in and lost the game he did not play in. overall, he had 2 strikeouts swinging and 4 men left on base. furthermore, his OBP, SLG, and OPS were all .000. in the field, Michael played 20.1 innings, but only 2 complete games in left because he left 1 game early in August after 4.1 innings following spraining his right ankle. he recorded 4 putouts as well.

vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers at Progressive Field, Michael bat .600 (3-for-5) in 2 of the 3 home games in June. (he missed the final game of the series when he was away from the team to be with his wife, who was about to give birth.) the Indians went 0-2 in the games he played in and won the game he did not play in. overall, he had 1 single, 2 extra base hits--doubles, 3 RBI, 1 sac fly, 1 run, 2 walks, 1 first at bat hit, and 5 total bases. he also stranded 1 runner. furthermore, he had a .625 OBP, 1.000 SLG, and 1.625 OPS. in the field, Michael played 18 innings/2 complete games in left and recorded 1 putout.

vs. the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park (no designated hitter allowed), Michael bat .308 (4-for-13) in 3 road games in July. the Indians went 1-2 in the games he played in. overall, he had 3 singles, 1 extra base hit--a double, 1 RBI, 2 runs, 1 walk, and 5 total bases. he also had 1 strikeout swinging and 4 left on base. furthermore, he had a .357 OBP, .385 SLG, and .742 OPS. in the field, Michael played 26 innings/3 complete games in left and recorded 4 putouts.

League Rankings

after getting back to qualifying in July, Michael fell behind in his plate appearances yet again in August. as a result, he is no longer a qualifying player. and so, as i explained in the very first section of this blog, i cannot compare his batting average to other qualifiers. i also cannot rank his OBP, SLG, OPS, or strikeouts with other players either because those, too, require that you be a qualifier for fair and accurate comparison.

excluding those five stats from my search, i found that Michael still has some that rank in the Top 10 among left fielders and other outfielders in the American League and MLB.

among left fielders in the American League, Michael's ranked 3rd in intentional walks (3); tied for 5th in sac flies (4); 6th in stolen bases (11); tied for 7th in doubles (20); 9th in RBI (52); tied for 9th in triples (1); 10th in hits (100), singles (70), walks (31), and total bases (149); and tied for 10th in extra base hits (30) and home runs (9).

among outfielders in the American League, Michael is tied for 8th in intentional walks.

among players in the American League, Michael does not have any stats that rank in the Top 10.

among all left fielders in the Major Leagues, Michael is tied for 7th in sac flies and intentional walks; and tied for 10th in stolen bases.

among all outfielders in the Major Leagues, Michael does not have any stats that rank in the Top 10.

among all players in the Major Leagues, Michael does not have any stats that rank in the Top 10.

In The Field & League Rankings

after five months of play, Michael has 135 putouts, 8 assists, 1 error, and 1 double play in 144 total chances. he currently has a .993 fielding percentage.

in addition, Michael holds a 36-game errorless streak in the outfield. that's certainly a long way from the franchise record that he set in 2014, when he reached 247 consecutive errorless games as an outfielder.

next are the rankings of Michael's defensive stats around the league through August:

among AL left fielders, Michael's 8 assists in 2017 rank tied for 2nd with Brett Gardner of the New York Yankees and Alex Gordon of the Kansas City Royals. Melky Cabrera of the Chicago White Sox has the most assists right now with 9.

also, Michael's 1 double play ranks tied for 4th with 15 other players. Delino DeShields of the Texas Rangers, Corey Dickerson of the Tampa Bay Rays, and Trey Mancini of the Baltimore Orioles have the most with 2.

among all MLB left fielders, Michael's 8 assists rank tied for 3rd with Gardner and Gordon.

among all AL outfielders, Michael's 8 assists rank tied for 5th (with 6 other players, including his Indians teammate, Bradley Zimmer).

among all MLB outfielders, Michael's 8 assists rank tied for 8th (with 8 other players).

the current MLB OF assist leader is Adam Duvall of the Cincinnati Reds with 13.

now let's break down the numbers. i am going to document his 2017 #s through August, the 3rd spot #s, the PH #s, and the DH #s, as well as the left field #s, the 3rd + left field #s, and overall outfield #s.

got any questions, comments, or concerns about Michael? leave 'em below!💭

Michael should be close to getting back to the Tribe now and when he does, i'll be tweeting all about his game appearances again. until then, keep checking my twitter or follow me @clevelandgirl23 for daily updates and information about his rehab progressions. and if you'd like to be on my subscription list, you can enter your email address in the box underneath the Blog Archive sidebar over on the upper right side of this page to receive notifications whenever i post a new blog.📧

my new polls are also up on the blog under the About Me sidebar, so be sure to vote. make your guesses as to what Michael's September/October batting average will be, how many HR he'll hit, and how many RBI he'll have, along with how many games the Indians will win in their final month of the regular season and whether or not they'll win the AL Central Division.🗹

next up: because the regular season ends after this month, there will not be a #s Through September/October blog. instead, i will be posting my usual several separate seasonal blogs, including Michael's Game-by-Game Numbers & Notes, his BOP & LF/DH/PH #s, and his Situational #s & Statistics. following that, i will be posting a new blog for each playoff series that the Indians take part in with Michael's numbers. that format will be much like a monthly blog. lastly, i will post a Wrap Up blog once the Indians are either eliminated from postseason play or win the World Series. so there's a lot of stuff coming up in October and i'll do my best to get it all published in a timely fashion!

thank you for reading this and PS--i should be posting a "special" blog sometime in the final two weeks of the season, so keep an eye out! or subscribe!😉
