Brantley's 2015 #s Through August

Michael just got done putting together a colossal month in August and that moved him right into the thick of things regarding team highs, league rankings, and even the American League batting race. it was incredible and i am so proud of him! he now has up to 32 games to play in before 2015 comes to an end, and if Michael can do anything close to what he did in August in these final weeks, then strap in tight folks because we are gonna be in for a really fun ride to the finish line. go Brantley!

so far in 2015, Michael has a total of 516 plate appearances and 453 at bats in 117 games (885.1 innings). in total, he has 146 hits, 51 extra base hits, 95 singles, 40 doubles, 11 home runs, 73 RBI, 5 sac flies, 60 runs, 56 walks, 8 intentional walks, 2 hit by pitches, 14 stolen bases (13 - 2nd, 1 - 3rd), 1 caught stealing (3rd), 12 GIDP, 43 strikeouts (31 swinging, 12 looking), 32 first at bat hits, 219 total bases, 187 left on base, 181 putouts, 7 assists, 2 errors, and 1 double play.

2015 batting average through August: .322 (146-453)

OBP: .395

SLG: .483

OPS: .879

Michael's .322 batting average is currently the highest on the team out of all the qualifying players. he now has a 3-point lead on Jason Kipnis, who's batting .319.

note: never before in Michael's career has he been
batting .322 at this point of the season in the major leagues. he's also never boasted such a high OBP or OPS through August either. keep in mind, these numbers could all dip down in the last month of the year because they are not cumulative stats like hits and RBI are, for example. regardless, this is an outstanding accomplishment by Michael thus far and he should be proud. i know i am!

speaking of cumulative stats, Michael again is a little behind in some of his totals through August due to the 13 games he had to miss because of his lower back strain and left shoulder inflammation. if Michael had truly been healthy, he would have at least 2 triples, 522 plate appearances, 472 at bats, 128 games played, 219 putouts, and 971.0 innings in the field by now after 5 months of baseball. so you can see just how much his health issues/increased DH time have affected these particular stats of his this season. despite that, he's still doing amazing as a whole so i'm not going to complain about anything lol

Team Leads and Career Highs

through August, Michael leads the team with 146 hits, 51 extra base hits, 95 singles (tied), 40 doubles, 73 RBI, 8 intentional walks, 14 stolen bases, 14:1 stolen base:caught stealing ratio, 219 total bases, .322 batting average, .395 OBP, .483 SLG, and .879 OPS. he has the least amount of strikeouts among qualifying players as well, with 43.

due to trades and platooning, Michael is now the only outfielder on the team with qualifying numbers lol however, defensively, Michael leads the outfielders with 181 putouts, 7 assists, 885.1 innings, .989 fielding percentage, and 100 games in the field. he's also tied for 1st with 1 double play.

Michael is 2nd on the team with 11 home runs, 5 sac flies (tied), 56 walks, 453 at bats, and 117 games played.

additionally, he's 3rd with 60 runs and 516 plate appearances.

after looking over Michael's past career numbers to this point in the season, i learned Michael set career highs for himself through August with 40 doubles, 56 walks, 8 intentional walks, .322 batting average, .395 OBP, and .879 OPS. he also has a career low 43 strikeouts.

HR:RBI, K Rate, and Outs

i thought the shoulder inflammation that popped up on Michael in August might restrict his swing and keep him from going yard, therefore not adding many home runs to his total through July. to my delight, he hit 3 for the month and now has a total of 11 home runs, which is the 2nd most on the team. Carlos Santana continues to lead the Tribe with 15 home runs. meanwhile, Yan Gomes has moved up to 3rd with his 9 home runs, Jason Kipnis and Francisco Lindor are tied for 4th with 7, and Lonnie Chisenhall is 6th with 6 homers.

now that Brandon Moss is gone (he was traded on July 30 to the St. Louis Cardinals), Michael's biggest competition in the RBI race is Santana. and because Santana is tops on the club in home runs, he's starting to gain on Michael in this category. currently, Michael leads the team with 73 RBI, which is just 7 ribbies ahead of Santana. Michael's most likely not going to break his record from 2014, but i know he's going to have plenty of opportunities in the last month of the season to drive more runners home.

here are his new HR:RBI ratios thus far. 5 of Michael's 73 RBI (6.8%) have come from his solo homers, while 19 of his 73 RBI (26.0%) have come from all 11 of his home runs.

Michael's K rate so far in 2015 is 8.3% (43 K/516 PA). he remains the toughest hitter in the American League to strike out, but he's slipped down to the 3rd toughest overall in the majors. Daniel Murphy of the New York Mets and Andrelton Simmons of the Atlanta Braves have lower K rates at 7.3% and 7.4%, respectively. at present, Michael averages 1 strikeout for every 12 plate appearances.

after 5 months, the majority of Michael's outs continue to come from his ability to put the barrel on the ball, as evidenced by the fact that he's only struck out 43 times this year. in contrast, he has 154 groundouts, 127 flyouts, and 46 lineouts.

Situational Statistics

Michael had a hit in 93 of the 117 games he's played thus far in 2015 and reached base safely in 102 games. he has 24 hitless games, but still reached base in 9 of those. Michael has 38 multi-hit games, 13 3+ hit games, and 13 multi-RBI games. he has at least 1 RBI in 54 games. in addition, he has 17 go-ahead hits and 19 go-ahead RBI. the Indians are now 58-59 in games that Michael played in and 6-7 in the games he sat out.

through August, Michael is now batting .335 (90-for-269) against right-handed pitchers and .304 (56-for-184) against left-handed pitchers. those BAs both went up from the end of last month, with his average against righties really excelling above his average against southpaws, which in its own right is still very good.

Michael's hitting .330 (71-for-215) with 33 RBI at home. he has 22 doubles and 7 home runs (29 extra base hits) at Progressive Field, along with 35 runs, 30 walks (4 intentional), 2 hit by pitches, 9 stolen bases (1 - 3rd), 5 GIDP, 22 strikeouts (15 swinging, 7 looking), and 114 total bases while playing 56 out of 63 total home games. he hit safely in 43 of the 56 home games he's played in and safely got on base in 48 of them. he has 13 hitless games at home, reaching base in 5.

when not playing at the corner of Carnegie and Ontario, Michael's hitting .315 (75-for-238) with 40 RBI away from Progressive Field. he has 18 doubles and 4 home runs (22 extra base hits) on the road, along with 25 runs, 26 walks (4 intentional), 5 stolen bases, 1 caught stealing (3rd), 7 GIDP, 21 strikeouts (16 swinging, 5 looking), and 105 total bases while playing 61 of 67 total road games. he also hit safely in 50 of 61 road games he's played in and safely reached base in 54 of them. he has 11 hitless games away from home, reaching base in 4.

after peaking on August 22 with the best clutch average in the American League at .374, Michael subsequently fell off to the 6th highest average, batting .347 (41-for-118) with runners in scoring position with 59 RBI through August. more specifically, he's hitting .320 (8-for-25) with RISP and 0 outs, .500 (23-for-46) with RISP and 1 out, and .213 (10-for-47) with RISP and 2 outs. since last month, he's only made minor improvement in the 2-out RISP category. if there's just one area i'd like to see Michael really do better in next month, it's this one.

with 2 outs in an inning, Michael's average stayed exactly the same, as he remains batting .256 (41-for-160). he has 9 doubles, 1 home run, 16 RBI, 27 walks, and 18 strikeouts (12 swinging, 6 looking). i'm not sure what to expect from him in September/October when coming to bat with 2 outs, but i hope he can get his 2-out hitting up to at least .280 for the year. is that too much to ask? it might be this season...

additionally, Michael's batting .354 (75-for-212) with 68 RBI with runners on base and .250 (3-for-12) with 8 RBI with bases loaded through August. once again, those were both increases from the end of July. if he can get just one or two more at bats with the bases loaded, and come through with a hit, he could definitely end 2015 with a respectable bases loaded BA.

furthermore, Michael's hitting .295 (71-for-241) with the bases empty now, another surge from a month ago. he currently has 22 doubles, 5 home runs, 5 RBI, and 19 walks when nobody's on base.

lastly, after 5 months of play, Michael has a 3.9 fWAR (wins above replacement), a 143 wRC+ (weighted runs created plus--the ability to create runs compared to the league average), a 1.6 BsR (baserunning runs above average with stolen bases and caught stealings), and a -2.8 UZR (ultimate zone rating). among qualifying AL left fielders, Michael's wRC+ ranks 1st, his WAR ranks 2nd, and his BsR ranks 3rd. Versus AL Central Division Teams

vs. the Detroit Tigers, Michael's now batting .366 (15-for-41) in 10 games. (he missed 2 games because he was out resting his back.) of his 15 hits, 5 are extra base hits--all doubles--giving him 20 total bases. he also has 5 RBI, 5 runs, 2 walks (1 intentional), 1 stolen base, and 3 first at bat hits. in addition, he now has 1 GIDP, 3 strikeouts (2 looking, 1 swinging), and 15 men left on base. defensively, he has 12 putouts in 84 total innings--58 innings in 7 games in left field and 26 innings in 3 games in center.

vs. the Chicago White Sox, Michael's down to batting just .214 (9-for-42) in 11 games. (he missed 2 games because of his back.) he has 4 doubles, 6 RBI, 1 sac fly, 1 run, 3 walks, 3 first at bat hits, and 13 total bases. he's grounded into 2 double plays, struck out 7 times (5 swinging, 2 looking), and left 20 guys on base. between left and center field, he's played 90.0 total innings (53.1 in left in 6 games and 36.2 in center in 4 games), and recorded 14 putouts. (he was the DH for 1 game.)

vs. the Kansas City Royals, Michael's batting .289 (11-for-38) in 11 games. (he missed 1 game to rest his back.) he has 1 double and 2 home runs to go along with 5 RBI, 8 runs, 9 walks, 1 hit by pitch, 3 stolen bases (1 - 3rd), 4 first at bat hits, and 18 total bases. he also has 1 GIDP, 1 strikeout swinging, and 12 left on base. in the field, he's recorded 14 putouts in 79 innings (65 in left in 8 games and 14 in center in 2 games). (he was the DH for 2 games.)

vs. the Minnesota Twins, Michael's batting .395 (15-for-38) in 9 games. (he missed 3 games because of left shoulder inflammation.) he has 3 doubles, 1 home run, 7 RBI, 7 runs, 4 walks, 2 stolen bases, 2 first at bat hits, and 21 total bases. he has 1 GIDP, 2 strikeouts swinging, and left 11 runners on base. defensively, he's got 17 putouts, 3 outfield assists, and 1 double play in 67 innings as the left fielder. (he was the DH for 1 game.)

these numbers are going to change in a month's time because the Indians play all 4 of their divisional teams in two series each (at home and away) in September. it's gonna be interesting to see if Michael can keep up his dominance against most of these AL Central foes. and i'm hoping he can improve against those damn ChiSox!

Spotlight On 2-Baggers

since the start of 2014 up to now, Michael leads the American League with 85 doubles. Detroit's Miguel Cabrera returned from his stint on the DL in mid-August and picked things up right where he left off. despite missing about 6 weeks, he's close behind Michael again with 77 doubles, while Houston's Jose Altuve is 3rd with 71 doubles.

(i learned of this information via Hoynsie on May 12 this year. since then, i've been keeping tabs on it and will continue to through the rest of 2015.)

League Rankings

when comparing Michael's numbers around the league, many of his stats currently rank in the top 10!

among other qualifying players in the American League, he's ranked 1st in doubles (40), 2nd in batting average (.322) and OBP (.395), 6th in intentional walks (8), 9th in hits (146), and 10th in OPS (.879). presently, Detroit's Miguel Cabrera leads the AL with a .358 BA. Michael is also ranked tied for 77th out of 78 players in strikeouts (43), meaning he's tied for the least amount of Ks in the AL.

among qualifying outfielders in the American League, Michael is 1st in doubles, batting average, and OBP; 2nd in hits and intentional walks; tied for 3rd in sac flies (5); 4th in walks (56); 5th in RBI (73) and OPS; tied for 5th in extra base hits (51); 6th in total bases (219); 7th in SLG (.483); and tied for 9th in plate appearances (516). plus, out of 25 players, he's 25th in strikeouts.

among qualifying left fielders in the American League, Michael ranks 1st in hits, extra base hits, doubles, RBI, intentional walks, total bases, batting average, OBP, and OPS; 2nd in singles (95), sac flies, walks, and SLG; 3rd in stolen bases (14), plate appearances, at bats (453), and games played (117); 4th in runs (60); and tied for 8th in home runs (11). additionally, he ranks 5th out of 5 qualifiers in strikeouts.

among all major league left fielders, Michael is 1st in doubles, intentional walks, batting average, and OBP; 2nd in hits, extra base hits, RBI, total bases, and OPS; tied for 2nd in walks; 3rd in singles; 4th in SLG; tied for 4th in sac flies; 5th in plate appearances; 7th in at bats; tied for 7th in stolen bases; 8th in runs; and 10th in games played. he's also 14th of 14 in strikeouts.

among all major league outfielders, Michael ranks 1st in doubles, 2nd in batting average, 3rd in OBP, 4th in intentional walks, 5th in hits, 8th in OPS, tied for 8th in sac flies, tied for 9th in walks, and 10th in RBI. he ranks 56th out of 56 in strikeouts as well.

among all major league qualifying players, Michael's doubles rank 1st, his batting average ranks 5th, and his OBP ranks 6th.

In Indians History

through August, Michael has a total of 40 doubles on the season. it's the first time in his career that he's hit at least 40 doubles in 2 straight seasons, and he's also just the 10th player in Indians history to do so. prior to Michael's accomplishment, the last Tribesman to hit 40+ doubles in back-to-back seasons was Travis Hafner in 2004 and 2005.

and if i had to make one prediction for the remainder of Michael's year, i'd say he's assuredly going to have back-to-back seasons of 45 doubles for the first time in his career once 2015 is a wrap!

In The Field

due to injury issues this year, Michael hasn't seen as much time in the outfield as he normally would through 5 months of play. his assist total seems to be at a standstill all of the sudden, and he had another unfortunate mishap while playing left field in August. other than that, his defense has been great. he can still make a tough diving catch look easy when it's anything but and play the carom off a left field wall expertly. Michael presently has a combined 181 putouts between left and center field in 2015 so far. he also has 7 outfield assists, 2 errors, 1 double play, and a .989 fielding percentage.

as the left fielder, Michael has 141 putouts, 6 assists, 2 errors, 1 double play, and a .987 fielding percentage after 5 months this year.

as the center fielder, he has 40 putouts, 1 assist, and a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage for 2015.

now that we'll be getting into some September call ups, Terry Francona could possibly use Michael as a DH for a few extra games as the season's end draws near. as a result, i don't see his fielding percentage increasing much within the final month. i'd also bet money that his time manning center field for the Indians is over for this year. they just don't need him there anymore. they might next year, but not at this point in time.

Michael's 6 assists in left field rank tied for 4th among all AL left fielders. Eddie Rosario of the Minnesota Twins has 10, Yoenis Cespedes had 9 while with the Detroit Tigers before being traded to the New York Mets (and his assist total is still included in the rankings for reasons i don't quite understand), and Sam Fuld of the Oakland Athletics has 7. Melky Cabrera of the Chicago White Sox has 6 along with Michael. Michael's 1 double play ranks tied for 5th with 11 other AL left fielders right now as well. his (.987) fielding percentage is no longer ranked among AL left fielders, probably due to the excessive amount of games he's played as a DH as opposed to the left fielder.

among all MLB left fielders, Michael's 6 assists rank tied for 8th with Melky Cabrera. he is 5 assists behind current assist leader Starling Marte of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

among all AL outfielders, Michael's 7 total assists rank tied for 16th (with Colby Rasmus of the Houston Astros).

among all MLB outfielders, Michael's 7 assists rank tied for 23rd (with 8 other players).

now let's break down the numbers. i am going to document his 2015 #s through August, the 3rd spot #s, the 5th spots #s, the DH #s, the PH #s, and the PH for DH #s**, as well as the left field #s, the center field #s, and overall outfield #s.

**as noted in my previous blog, because Michael came into a game in August to PH for the DH, there is a new category included here, appropriately titled "PH for DH." consequently, his appearance in that game counts in both his PH stats AND overall DH stats. (major shout out to Jordan Bastian for helping me discover this.)

so, if you were to add up Michael's #s like this: OF #s + DH #s + PH #s, the sum is NOT going to equal his total numbers. with that formula, you will be one at bat over his actual total, yet still have the correct overall BA due to rounding. i often add up Michael's #s that way to double check that my work is correct. instead, what you can do to ensure accurate numbers all around is, since Michael only had this one PH appearance so far, just add his OF #s + DH #s for the proper total and overall stats. or simply go by his BOPs: 3rd #s + 5th #s.**

upcoming change: because next month marks the end of baseball season, i won't be doing a recap of Michael's overall numbers like this one and all the previous recaps. instead, i'm going to go back to how i've done his seasonal numbers in the past, with several blogs including his Game-by-Game Numbers & Notes, his BOP & LF/CF/DH/PH #s, and a Final 2015 Wrap Up. and i usually take my time in posting those after the season's conclusion, so be on the look out for all of that a week or two into October. see you then!
