Carlos Santana Wins Wilson's 2017 Defensive Player of the Year Award!

another day, another trophy for an Indians player! this evening, on November 10, it was announced that Carlos Santana won Wilson Sporting Good's 2017 Defensive Player of the Year Award at 1st base! this is the first Defensive Player of the Year Award of his career. congratulations, Santana!👏

created by Wilson in 2012 to recognize the best defensive players in the game, this award uses several defensive metrics to determine its nine winners. a player's defensive WAR (wins above replacement) counts for 25%, Defensive Runs Saved factors in by another 25%, Inside Edge field ratings and Inside Edge arm ratings are 20% apiece, and the final 10% is based on
fielding percentage. note: a different formula is used to pick the pitcher and catcher winners. in addition, there is no American League and National League split here; players in both leagues are compared and only one can be crowned at each position as the overall winner for the season.

Santana, who began his career as a catcher and then tried 3rd base before finding a home at 1st, was also nominated for a Gold Glove Award this year for the first time in his career. unfortunately, he lost out to Eric Hosmer of the Kansas City Royals. so i was pretty surprised to learn that Santana won the DPOY award for 1st basemen.

here are some of Santana's fielding #s at 1st base in 2017 and where they ranked in MLB:
10 DRS (tied for 2nd)
4.8 UZR (3rd)
-5.7 Def (4th)
4.7 UZR/150 (4th)
95 assists (4th)
129 double plays (4th)
1225.2 innings (7th)
.996 fielding % (8th)
140 games (9th)
1055 putouts (10th)
3.0 fWAR (12th)
5 errors (tied 16th lowest)

according to Joe Noga's article on, Santana had the third fewest errors among 1st basemen with at least 1,000 chances this season. furthermore, per the Indians' twitter, Santana's DRS, assists, and double plays started (16) led all AL 1st basemen.

the complete list of Defensive Players of the Year for 2017 reads as:
1B Carlos Santana, Cleveland Indians
3B Nolan Arenado, Colorado Rockies
2B DJ LeMahieu, Colorado Rockies
SS Andrelton Simmons, Los Angeles Angels
CF Byron Buxton, Minnesota Twins
LF Alex Gordon, Kansas City Royals
RF Yasiel Puig, Los Angeles Dodgers
P Tyler Chatwood, Colorado Rockies
