Brantley's 2018 Batting Order Position & LF/PH/DH #s

hi, Brantley fans! hope you are well. this is the second Michael Brantley wrap up blog, which contains all of his number breakdowns based on his batting order positions and LF, PH, and DH #s for the 2018 regular season.

let's take a quick dive back into the past before i get into the present. in case you don't remember, prior to this season, Michael was the Indians' 3 hole hitter. in fact, he'd been regularly batting 3rd in the order since May 3, 2014 (minus the couple of games he played in 2016). even when Michael was out hurt, he would always return to the 3 spot, which he rightfully earned after his outstanding 2014 and 2015 seasons. even manager Terry Francona admitted to essentially building the lineup around Michael in the 3 hole. but while Michael was on the 10-Day DL battling his right ankle sprain in the second half of 2017, Jose Ramirez replaced him in the 3 hole. and Tito liked what he brought to that spot so much that he decided to continue letting Ramirez bat 3rd whether Michael was playing or not.

Michael started the 2018 campaign on the 10-Day DL and he remained in Arizona as he continued to build up endurance after spending another offseason/spring training rehabbing, this time from right ankle surgery. once he returned to the Tribe, Michael alternated between the Tribe's cleanup hitter and 5 hole hitter, depending on
if a right-handed or left-handed pitcher was starting. i was not a fan of this, especially because Michael did not have good career numbers in the 4th spot.

as a reminder, here are Michael's BOPs prior to the 2018 season:

while Michael bat 4th, he had Francisco Lindor, Jason Kipnis, and Ramirez in front of him, and Edwin Encarnacion and Yonder Alonso behind him. then when he bat 5th, Encarnacion was directly in front of him, while Brandon Guyer hit 6th. guys like Alonso, Yan Gomes, and Roberto Perez then hit in the 7 and 8 spots.

to my surprise, Michael excelled in the cleanup spot and he struggled when batting 5th. but in his defense, he didn't play nearly as many games in the 5 spot as 4th because the Indians weren't facing that many lefty starters early on in the season.

by the time May came along, more changes arose. first off, Michael stayed in the 4th spot regardless of what type of pitcher was pitching. then, on May 11, and mainly due to Kipnis' problems hitting, which resulted in an ice cold bat, Michael was promoted to the 2 spot. Francona gave numerous reasons for replacing Kip with Michael, including Michael's ability to use the hole between 2nd and 1st base so well with a runner on 1st, and how he was the least likely to be affected by this move.

once Michael was moved to 2nd, that is where he stayed for the rest of the year in every game he started. that meant, aside from when guys got days off, the typical Tribe Top 5 read as: Lindor, Brantley, Ramirez, Encarnacion, and Alonso. of course there were exceptions, like when a lefty was on the mound for the opposition, then Guyer would normally bat 5th in place of Alonso. not only that, but later on in the season, after the Indians acquired Josh Donaldson from the Toronto Blue Jays and he was deemed ready to play in September after rehabbing from a left calf injury, he bat 5th after Encarnacion, pushing Alonso down to 6th. so there were many BOP changes in 2018, but not too many involving Michael thankfully.

now let's look at his production based on where he bat this year. clearly, Michael spent most of his games batting 2nd, so that's why he has the most stats coming out of that spot. some of his numbers include 143 hits, 27 doubles, 1 triple, 14 home runs, 58 RBI, 79 runs, 42 walks, 4 hit by pitches, 11 stolen bases (10 - 2nd, 1 - 3rd), 51 strikeouts, 241 total bases, and .306 batting average in 116 games. i don't know about you, but i think that's great. and i admit, i was concerned that this BOP might change his approach at the plate and that he'd become more of a sac bunter (he had 1 in all of 2018, by the way), but that didn't end up being the case and i am glad.👍

in limited time batting 4th, Michael totaled 30 hits, 9 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs, 16 RBI, 9 runs, 6 walks, 1 stolen base (2nd), 7 strikeouts, 50 total bases, and .345 batting average in 21 games. my worries were for naught apparently. then again, i don't know that it really mattered where he was hitting in the lineup back in April and May because his bat was simply on fire at the beginning of his campaign.

on the other hand, Michael bat 5th in April in four games and did not do well. overall, he had 3 hits, 2 RBI, 1 run, 1 hit by pitch, 2 strikeouts, 3 total bases, and .214 batting average. so evidently he wasn't on fire every day. still, had Michael spent more time in the 5 spot, it is feasible that his numbers would have gotten better and his average would have gone up eventually. so i'm not going to conclude that he can't hit in the 5 hole based on this.

i suppose if batting 3rd is no longer an option, then Michael in the 2 hole was probably the next best thing. and, despite his production slowing down a bit at the end of the year when he didn't drive a lot of guys in and stranded a large portion of runners, he certainly proved he can hit well there. let's see what Michael's career BOP numbers look like now after his 2018 season's 2 spot stats were added to them:

photo cropped from sports.yahoo.com

it's amazing what one good year can do, huh?😉👏

now how about i take a minute to see how the guys batting behind Michael did this year when he got on base? for the season, Michael reached base a total of 245 times via hits, walks, hit by pitches, fielder's choices, forceouts, fielding errors, throwing errors, catcher interference, and passed ball (after striking out). he scored 89 runs total, 17 of which came from his own home runs. he was driven in 72 times by other players and left stranded 140 times. (he was lifted for a pinch runner eight times, caught stealing three times, caught in a rundown once, thrown out at 3rd base once, hit a walk-off single twice--when he technically was not stranded even though he reached, and thrown out trying to advance to 2nd base once, so i had to subtract 16 from the total count here.) for having some heavy hitters behind him, Michael sure was left on base a lot. i wrote in many of my monthly blogs that guys seemed to hit better when Michael wasn't on base and these numbers would seem to indicate that that was mostly true.

regarding Michael's defense, he only played left field in 2018. as much as people want to harp on how he doesn't have the same speed and range that he once had out there, and as much as certain statistics paint Michael as a bad defender, he's one of the best at playing balls off the 19-foot wall in Cleveland.

now Michael absolutely may have been somewhat hesitant going after balls at the start of the season due to him needing to learn that he could trust his surgically-repaired right ankle once again. but i definitely saw an increase in his confidence as the months continued and he ended up with a few spectacular diving catches. he did his rehab the right way and he yet again came back strong.

of his 143 games played, he spent parts of 134 in left field and completed 105. Francona subbed him out early whenever he saw fit or it was appropriate or a good opportunity to give Michael additional rest. though he wasn't hurt and had no recurrences of an ankle problem, it was better to be safe than sorry, and the extra innings off may have helped in the long run.

one thing Michael is still particularly good at in the outfield is throwing runners out from left. he concluded his year with six outfield assists, which is a little lower than i expected, but it was still a team high among OFs. he was also a part of turning two double plays, another team high. in 1136.1 total innings, Michael committed just one error, of the fielding variety. that transpired on June 26, when he came in on a ball, put his glove down, but the ball bounced off it.

after one specific assist on August 5, Paul Hoynes posted an article on cleveland.com the next day containing Tito's thoughts about Michael's ability to get a good throw off. "he's so good at that. he throws well anyway, but he sees the field real well. his awareness is real good and his balance--he can get it barehanded and he's already in throwing position. he's just so accurate. you see a lot of outfielders, they'll maybe get the ball where he did, but they clutch up. he catches it and he's ready to go."

in addition, Indians 3rd base coach Mike Sarbaugh complimented how good Michael is at reading the ball when it comes off the left wall near the foul line. "that part of the wall is angled a little bit and the ball will kick off it and come back to the right. he's really good at positioning himself on that play."

Hoynsie himself also went so far as to declare, "it is safe to say that no outfielder has played the 19-foot wall at Progressive Field better than Brantley since the ballpark opened in 1994."😀

not everybody views Michael as a good defender, however. during one of the Indians' games with the New York Yankees, one NY announcer claimed that Michael's arm wasn't as good anymore due to the shoulder surgeries he'd had in 2015 and 2016. too bad it was his non-throwing shoulder and bicep that were operated on though... #geteducated

Michael appeared in two games as a PH, once at the end of April when he was supposed to be getting a day off, and the other in September when he was supposed to be getting a day off to rest his bruised left ankle. both appearances occurred in the 6th spot. unfortunately, he was unable to get a hit either time and therefore, registered a .000 batting average for 2018 in the 6 hole and as a pinch hitter. it's a small sample size, so i don't think you can fairly draw any conclusions about his ability to come in off the bench because he's been very good at it in the past.

Michael also played seven games as the DH to give him some quasi-days off and get him off his feet a bit. he was extremely productive in his one game batting 4th in May, going 4-for-5 with three doubles. but he mostly DH'd after he was moved into the 2 hole and for whatever reason, had some tough games. that said, he did quite well overall as the designated hitter, finishing the year with a .323 BA.

reminder: i will be live tweeting all the playoff games Michael plays in (except for the ones i go to because i'll be more focused on watching him for what could be my last time ever in a Tribe uniform) and continuing to post/RT any other news and information that i find. so you might want to double check and make sure you're following me on twitter @clevelandgirl23, that way you won't miss anything. i'm also still going to spotlight special moments from Michael's career every Monday in the postseason for the finale of my #CelebratingMichaelBrantley series. most of his biggest accomplishments are listed in the thread, which you can browse back through or search the hashtag to read. and if you have a memory of Michael that you'd like to add, please do!🎉

don't forget, i have a subscription list, and you can enter your email address in the box underneath the Blog Archive sidebar over on the upper right side of this page to join it. then you will be among the first to receive notifications sent directly to your inbox every time i publish a new blog!📧
