Brantley's 2018 #s Through July

hi there, Brantley fans! we are two-thirds of the way through with the 2018 baseball campaign, can you believe it? i mean, where has the time gone, am i right? sadder still is this means Cleveland Indians fans only have two months left (in the regular season, at least) to enjoy watching Michael play in a Tribe uniform before he becomes a free agent and most likely signs somewhere else. sigh.😟💔

to give you a brief summary of what's occurred thus far in Michael's season, he put up excellent performances in both April and May, but the past two months have been challenging to say the least. he's been struggling in some areas that he generally does very well in, particularly with runners in scoring position, on the road, and against left-handed pitching. normally one of the most consistent, reliable, and clutch hitters in the game, it's surprising that Michael is having trouble in these specific categories. there is definite room for improvement, as you will soon see, and i know he'd agree. with this being his walk-year especially, him playing well is very important. the good news is, he still has a good amount of time to turn things around. oh and on another positive note, he's remained healthy this year, too!😀🙏

okay, let's get to the numbers. in this blog, you will find Michael's 2018 regular season numbers and statistics covering March 29 - July 31.

so far in 2018, Michael has
420 plate appearances and 386 at bats in 95 games (740.2 innings). in total, he has 114 hits, 40 extra base hits, 74 singles, 26 doubles, 2 triples, 12 home runs (2 grand slams), 57 RBI, 4 sac flies, 59 runs, 27 walks, 2 hit by pitches, 6 stolen bases (2nd), 3 caught stealing (2 - 2nd, 1 - 3rd), 6 reached on fielder's choice, 1 reached on forceout, 2 reached on fielding error, 1 reached on throwing error, 1 sac bunt, 12 GIDP, 36 strikeouts (27 swinging, 9 looking), 29 first at bat hits, 180 total bases, 140 left on base, 139 putouts, 4 assists, 1 error, and 1 double play.

2018 batting average through July: .295 (114-386)

OBP: .341

SLG: .466

OPS: .808

Batting Average Competition

Michael's .295 batting average is currently the 2nd highest on the team out of all the qualifying players. Jose Ramirez is ahead of him now, batting .298.

Team Leads and Career Highs

through July, Michael leads the team with 74 singles. he's tied for the team lead with 2 grand slams and 4 sac flies. also, among qualifying players, he has the least strikeouts with 36.

Michael is 2nd on the team with his .295 batting average and tied for 2nd with 2 triples.

in addition, he's 3rd with 114 hits, 40 extra base hits, 26 doubles, 59 runs, 180 total bases, 420 plate appearances, 386 at bats, .341 OBP, and .808 OPS.

he leads the outfielders with 139 putouts, 740.2 innings, and 87 games played. he's tied for 1st with 4 assists and 1 double play as well.

upon checking Michael's past numbers at this point in a season, i found that Michael still only has a career high through July with 2 grand slams.

HR:RBI Ratio, LOB, K Rate, and Outs

Michael now has 12 home runs in 2018 through July. his power has dwindled, as he hit just one long ball in July. with two months left, i'm hopeful he can still finish his season with at least 15, which i'd be totally fine with. you don't need to have 30 homers to be considered a good player, though those that do hit that many certainly get more recognition... the team leader in home runs right now is Jose Ramirez with 32. Francisco Lindor is 2nd with 27, Edwin Encarnacion is 3rd with 24, and Yonder Alonso has 18. Michael's 12 rank 5th.Yan Gomes has 11 homers and Jason Kipnis has 10 to round out the guys in double digits.

four months into the campaign, Michael has 57 RBI versus 140 men left on base. honestly, i think Michael should have more RBI right now. he's been struggling with RISP for a large portion of the last two months, so that's definitely contributed to what i feel is a lower ribbie total. aside from that, there have also been numerous times when Michael comes up to bat lately with the bases empty because either Lindor has cleared them with a homer, or else Lindor isn't on base for him. and this is kinda where my worries about him batting in the 2 hole come into play, as i believed batting 3rd or 4th was the better spot for him to really drive in runners. various factors are the reason for him ranking as one of the lowest (5th) out of the regulars on the team in RBI. we'll see if that changes at all in the final two months of baseball. the RBI leader is now Ramirez with 78. Encarnacion is close behind him with 76, followed by Lindor with 67 and Alonso with 64.

time for the latest HR:RBI ratio. nine of Michael's 12 home runs were solo, one was a 2-run bomb, and two were grand slams. therefore, 15.8% of his 57 RBI have come from his solo homers, while 33.3% of his 57 RBI have come from all 12 of his home runs.

Michael's K rate so far in 2018 is 8.6% (36 K/420 PA). he currently averages 1 strikeout for every 11.7 plate appearances. i'm very happy that, despite his struggles, Michael isn't swinging away like crazy at pitches outside the zone. try as pitchers might, he is a very tough guy to strike out.

through July, Michael has 127 groundouts, 53 flyouts, 41 lineouts, and 15 pop outs versus 36 strikeouts. you can see he's still getting the majority of his outs via ground balls as opposed to fly balls, and that's probably not going to change any time soon. that's just his way lol

Reached Base vs. Left Stranded

Michael has reached base a total of 153 times in 2018 via hits, walks, hit by pitches, fielder's choices, forceouts, fielding errors, and throwing errors. he's scored 59 runs total, 12 of which came from his own home runs. he's been driven in 47 times by other players and left stranded 85 times. (he was lifted for a pinch runner four times, caught stealing three times, caught in a rundown once, and thrown out at 3rd base once, so i had to subtract nine from the total count here.) that's still too high for my liking and i hope Michael's teammates can get him across home plate more in the second half of the year.

Streaks & Situational Statistics

Michael hit in 73 of the 95 games he's played in so far in 2018 and reached base safely in 84 games. he has 22 hitless games, but still reached base in 11 of those. Michael has 32 multi-hit games, 8 three+ hit games, and 13 multi-RBI games. he has at least 1 RBI in 39 games. in addition, he has 10 go-ahead hits and 11 go-ahead RBI. the Indians are now 54-41 in games that Michael's played in and 4-7 in the games he's missed/sat out.

Michael is currently batting .311 (89-for-286) against right-handed pitchers and .250 (25-for-100) against left-handed pitchers. at this rate, Michael is going to be getting days off when southpaws are scheduled to pitch because he just can't seem to have any success against them anymore.

Michael's hitting .340 (67-for-197) with 41 RBI at home. he has 18 doubles, 1 triple, and 7 home runs (26 extra base hits) at Progressive Field, along with 2 sac flies, 36 runs, 11 walks, 2 hit by pitches, 6 stolen bases (2nd), 1 caught stealing (3rd), 1 sac bunt, 5 GIDP, 15 strikeouts (9 swinging, 6 looking), and 108 total bases while playing 50 out of 53 total home games. he reached base on 3 fielder's choices, 1 forceout, 2 fielding errors, and 1 throwing error as well. he hit safely in 41 of the 50 home games he's played in and safely reached base in 45 of them. he has 9 hitless games at home, reaching base in 4. he has at least 1 RBI in 25 home games.

Michael's hitting .249 (47-for-189) with 16 RBI away from Progressive Field. he continues to have trouble hitting on the road, as evidenced by yet another BA decrease for the third consecutive month. i have no explanations or answers for it. he has 8 doubles, 1 triple, and 5 home runs (14 extra base hits) on the road, along with 2 sac flies, 23 runs, 16 walks, 2 caught stealing (2nd), 7 GIDP, 21 strikeouts (18 swinging, 3 looking), and 72 total bases while playing 45 out of 53 total road games. he reached base on 3 fielder's choices as well. he hit safely in 32 of the 45 road games he's played in and safely reached base in 39 of them. he has 13 hitless games away from home, reaching base in 7. he has at least 1 RBI in 14 road games.

Michael's now batting .243 (25-for-103) with runners in scoring position with 42 RBI through July. that's a 35 point drop. wow. i mean, if you thought he was doing bad before, well, his July killed him. categorically, he's batting .292 (7-for-24) with RISP and 0 outs, .265 (9-for-34) with RISP and 1 out, and .200 (9-for-45) with RISP and 2 outs. he went down in every situation. Michael has to find a way to get his hitting back on track with runners in scoring position ASAP; right now he needs an SOS.

with 2 outs in an inning, Michael is presently batting .269 (28-for-104). somehow, this was an improvement from a month ago. go figure. he now has 7 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs, 21 RBI, 7 walks, 1 hit by pitch, and 9 strikeouts (8 swinging, 1 looking).

additionally, he's hitting .305 (50-for-164) with 48 RBI with runners on base and .667 (6-for-9) with 16 RBI with the bases loaded so far this season. the first average decreased again because he struggled with runners on almost as much as with RISP. if that trend continues, it won't be good.

lastly, Michael's hitting .288 (64-for-222) with the bases empty right now. he has 11 doubles, 2 triples, 9 home runs, 9 RBI, 17 walks, 2 hit by pitches, and 24 strikeouts (16 swinging, 8 looking).

through the first four months of the season, Michael has a 1.1 fWAR (wins above replacement), a 117 wRC+ (weighted runs created plus--the ability to create runs compared to the league average), a -2.0 BsR (baserunning runs above average with stolen bases and caught stealings), a -5.0 UZR (ultimate zone rating), and a -10 DRS (defensive runs saved). his wRC+ ranks 7th, his WAR ranks 9th, and his BsR ranks 14th among 14 qualifying American League left fielders. his UZR and DRS rank 6th among 7 qualifying AL LF. League Rankings

when comparing Michael's numbers to other qualifying players around the American League and in MLB, they don't rank as high as they did earlier this year. however, he still has several stats that rank in the Top 10, so let's take a look at those (per mlb.mlb.com/stats):

Michael exhibited perfect defense in July, giving him a 27-game errorless streak in the outfield. if he's ever going to break his career high 247 consecutive errorless games in the outfield from 2014, which was also an Indians franchise record, it will likely happen when he's with his next team because i doubt Michael returns to Cleveland once he hits free agency this offseason.😞

after four months, here are where some of Michael's defensive stats rank around the league:

among AL left fielders, Michael's 4 assists in 2018 rank tied for 7th with 5 other players.
