Brantley's 2015 Second Half #s

before i get into Michael's overall 2015 numbers, i'm going to calculate his 2nd half numbers. the format for this blog will be the same as the one i used for his 1st half numbers with the split sections. once again, you can scroll through everything and just read what you find the most interesting, or you can skim each section and focus on the bold/italicized information.

post-All Star break in 2015, Michael had a total of 250 plate appearances and 224 at bats in 58 games (417.2 innings). in total, he had 75 hits, 31 extra base hits, 44 singles, 21 doubles, 10 home runs, 38 RBI, 1 sac fly, 33 runs, 23 walks, 3 intentional walks, 2 hit by pitches, 6 stolen bases (5 - 2nd, 1 - 3rd), 6 GIDP, 25 strikeouts (21 swinging, 4 looking), 14 first at bat hits, 126 total bases, 94 left on base, 86 putouts, 1 assist, and 1 error.

2nd Half 2015 batting average: .335 (75-224)

OBP: .400

SLG: .563

OPS: .963

2nd Half of July BA: .346

August BA: .406

September/October BA: .237

Michael's .335 batting average in the 2nd half was the
2nd highest on the team out of all the qualifying players. only Francisco Lindor finished ahead of him with a .345 batting average.

when measuring this post-ASB batting average with previous seasons, it ranks exactly the same as in 2014 lol even with his less than pedestrian September, he still managed a very high BA for the 2nd half as a whole. that's outstanding.

looking back at his past 1st/2nd half batting averages, Michael hit .288/.288 in 2012, .279/.291 in 2013, and .322/.335 in 2014. his continuous upwards trend after the break is encouraging.

Quick Overview and Shoulder Issues

in the 2nd half of 2015, Michael's lower back strain was relatively quiet. instead, it was injuries to both of his shoulders that hindered his abilities and held him out of a handful of games. not to mention Michael finally endured a slump right before his season came to an end in late September.

it was very disheartening to see Michael injure his right shoulder while making a diving catch attempt on September 22, especially since it eventually led to his early shut down. he ultimately missed 10 games because of right shoulder soreness/inflammation. sitting on the bench, unable to contribute to the team and add on to some of his stats to potentially achieve a few new personal records, was not the most quintessential way for him to wrap up his year. he was disappointed, but it was the best decision for his health and he understood that.

nonetheless, Michael still put together a strong second half overall thanks to his performance in the 2nd half of July and an extraordinary month of August. it was actually one of the stronger 2nd halves around the league. he even set a new career high and career low for himself. he also set an example for every player on the team by putting extra work in with the trainers and willingly playing through his pain for as long as he could because he really wanted to help the Indians make that playoff push. he put the team first, like he's always done, which is a very admirable trait. so in a way, he did end the season on a good note and i commend him for that.

Team Leads and Career Highs

in the second half, Michael led the team with 21 doubles, 10 home runs (tied), a 6:0 stolen base:caught stealing ratio, .400 OBP, .563 SLG, .963 OPS, and 164 wRC+. he also had the least amount of strikeouts among qualifying players with 25.

Michael was 2nd on the team with 75 hits, 31 extra base hits, 44 singles, 33 runs, 23 walks, 3 intentional walks, 2 hit by pitches (tied), 6 stolen bases (tied), 126 total bases, and .335 batting average.

additionally, he was 3rd with 38 RBI, 58 games, 250 plate appearances, and 224 at bats.

after comparing Michael's numbers to past seasons, i found that he set career highs for himself in the second half with 31 extra base hits, 10 home runs, 38 RBI, 33 runs, 0 caught stealings, 6:0 stolen base:caught stealing ratio, .400 OBP, .563 SLG, and .963 OPS.

League Rankings

as usual, i'm only including those categories where Michael finished in the top 10.

among qualifying players in the American League, Michael ranked 4th in doubles (21); 6th in batting average (.335), OBP (.400), and OPS (.963); and 7th in SLG (.563). his teammate, rookie Francisco Lindor, led the AL in the 2nd half with his BA of .345. Michael also ranked 87th out of 88 players in strikeouts (25), meaning he had the 2nd least amount of Ks in the AL.

among qualifying outfielders in the American League, Michael was 2nd in doubles, batting average, and OPS; 3rd in OBP and SLG; tied for 3rd in intentional walks (3); tied for 6th in extra base hits (31); 7th in hits (75); and tied for 9th in RBI (38). in addition, out of 35 players, he was 35th in strikeouts.

among qualifying left fielders in the American League, Michael ranked 1st in batting average, OBP, SLG, and OPS; 2nd in hits and doubles; tied for 2nd in extra base hits and intentional walks; 3rd in RBI, stolen bases (6), and total bases (126); 4th in singles (44) and home runs (10); tied for 4th in walks (23); 6th in plate appearances (250); 7th in runs (33); tied for 7th in hit by pitches (2) and at bats (224); and 10th in games (58). he ranked 11th out of 11 qualifiers in strikeouts as well.

among all major league left fielders, Michael was 2nd in OBP and OPS; tied for 2nd in doubles; 3rd in batting average and SLG; tied for 3rd in extra base hits; tied for 4th in intentional walks; 6th in total bases; 7th in hits and RBI; tied for 7th in home runs; tied for 8th in walks; and tied for 9th in stolen bases. he was also 24th of 25 in strikeouts.

among all major league outfielders, Michael ranked tied for 2nd in doubles, 4th in batting average, 5th in OPS, 6th in OBP, 7th in SLG, and tied for 9th in intentional walks. plus, he was 62nd out of 63 players in strikeouts.

among all major league qualifying players, Michael's doubles ranked tied for 6th, his batting average ranked 9th, and his OPS ranked 10th. his 25 strikeouts ranked tied for 150th out of 156 qualifiers, too.

HR:RBI, K Rate, and Outs

Michael had a career high 10 homers in the second half of the season. he totally flipped the switch this year, hitting more bombs after the break than ever before. i assume his early season back issue suppressed his power, and once he started feeling better, he was able to regain his strength post-break and knock more balls out of the park.

he was tied for the team lead with Francisco Lindor with his 10 homers. behind them were Yan Gomes and Carlos Santana with 9 home runs, Abraham Almonte and Jose Ramirez with 5, and Ryan Raburn and Giovanny Urshela with 4.

Michael left A LOT of runners on base in the second half of 2015--94 to be exact. despite that, he still totaled 38 RBI, which was also a second half career high. had Michael had a better September and not missed so much time, he possibly could have acquired the most RBI on the team after the break, instead of finishing 3rd behind Santana (45) and Lindor (42).

Michael's HR:RBI ratio for the second half is as follows: 4 of Michael's 38 RBI (10.5%) came from his solo homers, while 18 of his 38 RBI (47.4%) came from all 10 of his home runs.

Michael's post-break K rate was 10.0% (25 K/250 PA). he was the 2nd toughest hitter in the American League to strike out and tied for 6th toughest overall in the majors. he averaged 1 strikeout for every 10 plate appearances.

coming as no surprise, the majority of Michael's outs in the second half were recorded via contact with the ball. after the All Star break, he had 25 strikeouts versus 64 groundouts and 67 flyouts. he also had 23 line drive outs, including lining into 1 double play.

Streaks and Situational Statistics

Michael had a hit in 43 of the 58 games he played in the 2nd half of 2015 and reached base safely in 49 games. he had 15 hitless games, but reached base in 6 of those. Michael had 22 multi-hit games, 9 3+ hit games, and 9 multi-RBI games. he had at least 1 RBI in 22 games. in addition, he had 8 go-ahead hits and 9 go-ahead RBI. the Indians were 30-28 in games that Michael played in and 9-6 in the games he sat out.

Michael achieved a number of streaks in his 2nd half of the year, including:

--an 8-game on-base streak from July 17-25.

--a 9-game hitting streak from July 27 - August 4.

--a 9-game on-base streak from July 27 - August 4.

--a 12-game hitting streak on the road from July 5 - August 4.

--a 12-game on-base streak on the road from July 5 - August 4.

--a 3-game, 3-hit streak spanning from August 8-11 (over 4 days).

--safely reaching base in 13 straight games from August 17-30.

--safely reaching base in 8 straight road games between August 17-30.

--a small 7-game hitting streak from August 23-30.

--a small 7-game on-base streak from September 7-15.

after the break, Michael bat .359 (51-for-142) against right-handed pitchers and .293 (24-for-82) against left-handed pitchers. he did very well against both righties and southpaws, with a particularly exceptional performance against the former.

in the second half, Michael hit .352 (38-for-108) with 18 RBI at home. he had 11 doubles and 5 home runs (16 extra base hits) at Progressive Field, along with 21 runs, 13 walks (2 intentional), 2 hit by pitches, 4 stolen bases (1 - 3rd), 3 GIDP, 15 strikeouts (12 swinging, 3 looking), and 64 total bases while playing 27 out of 35 total home games. he hit safely in 19 of the 27 home games he played in and safely got on base in 23 of them. he had 8 hitless games at home, reaching base in 4.

on the contrary, Michael hit .319 (37-for-116) with 20 RBI away from Progressive Field. he had 10 doubles and 5 home runs (15 extra base hits) on the road, along with 12 runs, 10 walks (1 intentional), 2 stolen bases, 3 GIDP, 10 strikeouts (9 swinging, 1 looking), and 62 total bases while playing 31 of 38 total road games. he also hit safely in 24 of 31 road games he played and got on base safely in 26 of them. he had 7 hitless games away from home, reaching base in 2.

Michael bat .276 (16-for-58) with runners in scoring position with 27 RBI in the second half. breaking it down, he hit .231 (3-for-13) with RISP and 0 outs, .370 (10-for-27) with RISP and 1 out, and .167 (3-for-18) with RISP and 2 outs. Michael's struggles in September really dragged most of his [2nd half] RISP numbers down. sadly, his 2-out stats remain disappointing and, surprisingly, i was also displeased with his troubles when there were no outs in an inning.

with 2 outs in an inning, Michael hit .265 (18-for-68). he had 7 doubles, 1 home run, 8 RBI, 12 walks, and 5 strikeouts (4 swinging, 1 looking). while this was indeed an improvement from his 1st half, it still was not nearly on par with what i know Michael is capable of.

furthermore, he bat .315 (34-for-108) with 34 RBI with runners on base and .500 (2-for-4) with 4 RBI with bases loaded after the break. he didn't have an abundance of opportunities to bat with the bases loaded in his last 2 and a half months of the season, but when he did, he clearly came through for the team more than in the 1st half.

finally, Michael hit .353 (41-for-116) with the bases empty. he had 13 doubles, 4 home runs, 4 RBI, and 7 walks when batting with nobody on base in the second half.

post-break, Michael had a 2.5 fWAR (wins above replacement), a 164 wRC+ (weighted runs created plus--the ability to create runs compared to the league average), and a 0.7 BsR (baserunning runs above average with stolen bases and caught stealings). among qualifying AL left fielders, Michael's WAR and wRC+ ranked 1st, and his BsR ranked tied for 5th. [these stats are all courtesy of fangraphs.com.]

In The Field

defensively, Michael had a combined 86 putouts in both left and center field after the All Star break. he also had 1 outfield assist, 1 error, and a .989 fielding percentage.

as the left fielder, Michael had 78 putouts, 1 assist, 1 error, and a .988 fielding percentage.

as the center fielder, he had 8 putouts and a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.

Michael's sole error occurred on August 29, another fielding error which came while he was in left field. since then, Michael played in just 19 games in the outfield--all in left field--and will begin his 2016 season on a 19-game errorless streak. gotta start somewhere, right?

because Michael only recorded 1 outfield assist in the second half, there's really no point in ranking that compared to other left fielders and outfielders around the league. so i'm not going to.
