Brantley's Second Half 2017 #s

before i start rolling out all my upcoming Michael Brantley's 2017 final #s blogs, it's time to review his second half #s and stats. in this portion of the season, the Indians played 75 games. Michael, however, did not play nearly that much following the All Star Break, so let's see how he did in limited action on the field.

post-All Star Break in 2017, Michael had a total of 97 plate appearances and 88 at bats in 24 games (180.0 innings). in total, he had 25 hits, 7 extra base hits, 18 singles, 3 doubles, 4 home runs, 15 RBI, 2 sac flies, 16 runs, 6 walks, 1 intentional walk, 1 hit by pitch, 3 stolen bases (2nd), 2 GIDP, 10 strikeouts (7 swinging, 3 looking), 6 first at bat hits, 40 total bases, 45 left on base, 32 putouts, 3 assists, and 1 double play.

2nd Half 2017 batting average: .284 (25-88)

OBP: .330

SLG: .455

OPS: .784

2nd Half of July BA:
.281

August BA: .286 (not a qualifying player)

September/October BA: .333 (not a qualifying player)

the player who had the highest 2nd half batting average out of all the qualifying players on the team was Jose Ramirez with his .300 BA.

Michael did not acquire enough plate appearances over the course of the second half in order to be considered a qualifier. while the prerequisite is 3.1 PA per game, Michael totaled just 1.3. therefore, his .284 batting average cannot be ranked among those Indians players who did qualify.

here are Michael's 1st half vs. 2nd half batting average splits from the past six seasons:
2017 - .304 vs. .284 (not a qualifying player)
2016 - .231 (not a QP) vs. N/A
2015 - .292 vs. .335
2014 - .322 vs. .335
2013 - .279 vs. .291
2012 - .288 vs. .288

Michael has typically been a better hitter after the All Star Break. this year and last year are the only exceptions thanks to his injury issues.

Quick Overview

when the second half of the season got underway, Michael did pretty well, hitting in 13 of his 16 games to finish off July. though his batting average was mediocre, he amassed three home runs and drove in 12 runners. he even collected his 1,000th career hit on July 19! but everything changed for him in August, specifically on August 8. he was in left field, backing up a play and after taking a few steps toward center field, Michael pulled up, sat down, and then left the game. at the time, it seemed as if he had seriously re-injured his right ankle and might be done for the year.

he was quickly placed on the 10-Day DL on August 9 with what the medical staff called a mild ankle sprain and was sporting a walking boot. he went to see a specialist on August 11 to see if there was a better way to brace or tape his ankle for more support. while in the boot, Michael maintained some baseball activities, including hitting and throwing. he finally got out of the boot on August 21, but still was not allowed to run. Michael only played in six games in August, totaling one home run and three RBI.

at the beginning of September, Michael began to run on the AlterG treadmill--an anti-gravity, non-weight bearing device. he continued to have pain in one spot of his ankle as more weeks went by and was not able to run unassisted. on September 14, Michael and the medical staff consulted with doctors in Utah on a conference call, seeking advice on how to get him over the hump. then he went to see an ankle specialist on September 19 in Vail, Colorado, where it was determined Michael had a deltoid ligament sprain and ankle synovitis. after being shut down from all running activity for a week, he started to do some light running in the outfield, followed by sprinting and taking cuts in the outfield, and graduated to more aggressive lateral running. his running program came on pretty quickly and he was activated from the DL on September 30 just in time to make appearances in the final two games of the regular season as a pinch hitter. the plan right now is for Michael to be a pinch hitter off the bench in the American League Division Series, at least in the early going.

as a result of his ankle injury recurrence, Michael played in just under a third of the games in the second half. his numbers aren't much to criticize, but i'm hoping i'll have something exciting to talk about in the October postseason. fingers crossed.🤞

Team Leads and Career Highs

in the second half, Michael did not have any team leads.

however, he was tied for 3rd with 2 sac flies and 1 intentional walk.

Michael did not set any career highs in the second half.

League Rankings

like i explained at the beginning of this post, Michael was not a qualifying player in the second half of 2017, and therefore, i cannot compare his batting average to other qualifiers around the league. besides that, i also cannot rank his strikeouts, OBP, SLG, or OPS, which all require qualifier status for accurate comparison. eliminating those stats from my research, i found that Michael ranked in the Top 10 among American League and MLB left fielders in two minor categories.

among left fielders in the American League, Michael ranked tied for 3rd in sac flies (2) and tied for 7th in intentional walks (1).

among outfielders in the American League, Michael did not have any stats that ranked in the Top 10.

among players in the American League, Michael did not have any stats that ranked in the Top 10.

among all left fielders in the Major Leagues, Michael was tied for 6th in sac flies and tied for 8th in intentional walks.

among all outfielders in the Major Leagues, Michael did not have any stats that ranked in the Top 10.

among all players in the Major Leagues, Michael did not have any stats that ranked in the Top 10.

HR:RBI Ratio, LOB, K Rate, and Outs

before Michael went down with another ankle sprain, he was starting to get himself going again in the home run department. unfortunately, he only accumulated 4 home runs in the second half, well below what his teammates had. the post-break team leader in home runs was Edwin Encarnacion with 20. the other Indians with double digit homers were Francisco Lindor with 19, Carlos Santana with 13, and Jose Ramirez with 12. Michael's four rank tied for 8th (with Austin Jackson and Jason Kipnis) behind Yan Gomes (9), Jay Bruce (7), and Roberto Perez (7).

after the break, Michael had a total of 15 RBI vs. 45 men left on base. in limited games, i was pleased with his runs batted in and surprised at his runners stranded numbers. he clearly had plenty of opportunities to drive in more of his teammates yet didn't deliver. Encarnacion led the team with 59 RBI in the second half, followed by Lindor's 46, Gomes' 35, Ramirez's 35, and Santana's 32. Michael was tied for 9th with Giovanny Urshela.

the HR:RBI ratio for Michael's second half is as follows: three of Michael's 4 home runs were solo and the other was a 2-run bomb. therefore, 20% of his 15 RBI came from his solo homers, while 33.3% of his 15 RBI came from all 4 of his home runs.

Michael's post-break K rate was 10.3% (10 K/97 PA). he averaged 1 strikeout for every 9.7 plate appearances. no, he did not play a full second half and didn't acquire as many PAs as usual, but this is still a slightly higher K rate than he's capable of. that's due to Michael's continued troubles laying off balls that were outside the strike zone.

in the second half, Michael had 29 groundouts, 10 lineouts, 9 pop outs, and 7 flyouts versus 10 strikeouts. as always, the majority of his outs came from making contact. in fact, he got the bat on the ball almost 85% of the time prior to an out. however, he still hit the ball on the ground more than he got it up in the air after the All Star break.

Reached Base vs. Left Stranded

in the second half of 2017, Michael reached base a total of 36 times via hits, walks, hit by pitches, fielding errors, fielder's choices, and forceouts. he scored 16 runs total, 4 of which came from his own home runs. he was driven in 12 times by other players and left stranded 20 times. Jose Ramirez and Edwin Encarnacion continued to leave Michael on base more than they were able to bring him home.

Streaks and Situational Statistics

Michael had a hit in 18 of the 24 games he played in the 2nd half of 2017 and reached base safely in 21 games. he had 6 hitless games, but still reached base in 3 of those. Michael had 7 multi-hit games, no three+ hit games, and 2 multi-RBI games. he had at least 1 RBI in 12 games. in addition, he had 3 go-ahead hits and 4 go-ahead RBI. the Indians were 14-10 in games that Michael played in and 41-10 in the games he sat out/missed.

Michael had a few noteworthy streaks in his 2nd half of the year, including:

--a 17-game on-base streak between July 5-26. it spanned over July 5-9 and July 14-26.

--an 11-game on-base streak at home between July 5-26. it spanned over July 5-9 and July 21-26.

--a still active 13-game on-base streak on the road between July 1 - August 1. it spans over July 1-2, July 14-19, July 28-29, and July 31 - August 1.

--a still active 9-game hitting streak on the road between July 15 - August 1. it spans over July 15-19, July 28-29, and July 31 - August 1.

--an 8-game on-base streak between July 28 - August 6.

after the break, Michael bat .259 (14-for-54) against right-handed pitchers and .324 (11-for-34) against left-handed pitchers. it's atypical to see him struggle against righties yet excel so much against southpaws. with more playing time though, i'm sure his average against the former would have improved.

in the second half, Michael hit .298 (14-for-47) with 9 RBI at home. he had 1 double and 3 home runs (4 extra base hits) at Progressive Field, along with 11 runs, 3 walks (1 intentional), 1 hit by pitch, 1 stolen base (2nd), 1 GIDP, 6 strikeouts (4 swinging, 2 looking), and 24 total bases while playing 14 out of 36 total home games. he hit safely in 9 of the 14 home games he played in and safely got on base in 11 of them. he had 5 hitless games at home, reaching base in 2.

Michael hit .268 (11-for-41) with 6 RBI away from Progressive Field. he had 2 doubles and 1 home run (3 extra base hits) on the road, along with 1 sac fly, 5 runs, 3 walks, 2 stolen bases (2nd), 1 GIDP, 4 strikeouts (3 swinging, 1 looking), and 16 total bases while playing 10 of 39 total road games. he hit safely in 9 of the 10 road games he played in and got on base safely in all 10 of them. he had 1 hitless game away from home, reaching base in it.

Michael bat .259 (7-for-27) with runners in scoring position with 10 RBI in the second half. more specifically, he hit .429 (3-for-7) with RISP and 0 outs, .125 (1-for-8) with RISP and 1 out, and .250 (3-for-12) with RISP and 2 outs. it is a fairly small sample size, but i definitely didn't expect to see Michael do worse with 1 out in an inning than with 2 outs.

with 2 outs in an inning, Michael hit .216 (8-for-37). he had 3 home runs, 6 RBI, 3 walks, and 2 strikeouts swinging. while only racking up eight hits here, at least most of them were productive, as he did drive in six runners. other than that, i can't say anything else positive because his BA is certainly disappointing.

additionally, he bat .313 (15-for-48) with 12 RBI with runners on base and .000 (0-for-3) with 1 RBI with bases loaded after the break. Michael clearly performed quite well with men on base except for when the bases were filled.

lastly, Michael hit .250 (10-for-40) with the bases empty. he had 3 doubles, 3 home runs, 3 RBI, 4 walks, and 4 strikeouts (2 swinging, 2 looking) in the second half.

post-break, Michael had a 0.3 fWAR (wins above replacement), a 102 wRC+ (weighted runs created plus--the ability to create runs compared to the league average), and a 1.2 BsR (baserunning runs above average with stolen bases and caught stealings). none of these stats rank among the 13 qualifying American League left fielders because Michael was not a qualifier in the second half. [these stats all came courtesy of fangraphs.com.]

Versus AL Central Division Teams

when the Indians played the Detroit Tigers, Michael missed all 7 games--4 on the road and 3 at home--in the second half. he missed all 4 games in one September/October road series because he was still on the 10-Day DL with a right ankle sprain for the second time this year, but had begun running on the AlterG (non-weight bearing) treadmill. he missed all 3 games in one September/October home series because he was still on the 10-Day DL with a right ankle sprain for the second time and still running on the AlterG treadmill. the Indians went 7-0 in the games he did not play in.

when the Indians played the Kansas City Royals, Michael missed all 10 games--3 on the road and 7 at home--in the second half. he missed all 3 games in one August road series because he was still on the 10-Day DL with a right ankle sprain for the second time this year, wearing a walking boot for most of the time, but doing some light baseball activities; he missed all 3 games in one August home series because he was still on the 10-Day DL with a right ankle sprain for the second time, out of the boot, back throwing and hitting, but not cleared to resume running; and he missed all 4 games in one September/October home series because he was still on the 10-Day DL with a right ankle sprain for the second time, still running on the AlterG treadmill, but unable to run unassisted. the Indians went 8-2 in the games he did not play in.

when the Indians played the Minnesota Twins, Michael missed all 6 games--3 on the road and 3 at home--in the second half. he missed all 3 games in one August road series because he was on the 10-Day DL with a right ankle sprain for the second time this year, wearing a walking boot and still in the healing stages at this time; and he missed all 3 games in one September/October home series because he was still on the 10-Day DL with a right ankle sprain for the second time, or more specifically diagnosed deltoid ligament sprain and ankle synovitis, back in the walking boot, and shut down from all running activity. the Indians went 4-2 in the games he did not play in.

vs. the Chicago White Sox, Michael bat .333 (4-for-12) in 4 games--2 of the 7 road games and 2 of the 3 home games--in the second half. (he had 1 scheduled day off during one July road series. he missed all 4 games in one September/October road series because he was still on the 10-Day DL with a right ankle sprain for the second time this year, but had begun running on the AlterG (non-weight bearing) treadmill. he missed 1 game in one September/October home series because he was still on the 10-Day DL with a right ankle sprain for the second time, or more specifically diagnosed deltoid ligament sprain and ankle synovitis, but was doing lateral running on the field, outfield drills, and took part in BP on the field.) the Indians went 3-1 in the games he played in and 5-1 in the games he did not play in. overall, Michael had 2 singles and 2 extra base hits, including 1 double and 1 home run, to go along with 2 RBI, 1 sac fly, 1 run, 2 first at bat hits and 8 total bases. he also had 1 strikeout swinging and left 11 men on base. furthermore, he had a .308 OBP, .667 SLG, and .974 OPS. while playing left field, Michael recorded 3 putouts in 16 innings, but only 1 complete game because he was subbed out defensively after 7 innings in 1 game in July because the Indians were winning a blowout. he was a PH in 2 games. he came in to PH in the bottom of the 5th inning in 1 game in September and then was subbed out defensively. he came in to PH in the bottom of the 5th inning in 1 game in October and then stayed in the game as the DH, which also made him the PH for DH in the game.

Michael barely played against the AL Central in the second half, which is unfortunate because ordinarily he's very good when it comes to that. leave any thoughts you might have about his divisional play below.

Interleague Play

the Indians played a total of six games against three National League teams in the second half of 2017. Michael played in five of those games. the Indians went 3-2 in the games he played in and lost the game he did not play in. overall, Michael bat .278 (5-for-18) in Interleague Play.

vs. the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park (no designated hitter allowed), Michael bat .308 (4-for-13) in 3 road games in July. the Indians went 1-2 in the games he played in. overall, he had 3 singles, 1 extra base hit--a double, 1 RBI, 2 runs, 1 walk, and 5 total bases. he also had 1 strikeout swinging and 4 left on base. furthermore, he had a .357 OBP, .385 SLG, and .742 OPS. in the field, Michael played 26 innings/3 complete games in left and recorded 4 putouts. after starting out 1-for-9 in the first two games, Michael really redeemed himself in the finale to finish with a good average against San Fran.

vs. the Cincinnati Reds at Progressive Field, Michael bat .333 (1-for-3) in 1 home game in July. (this was a makeup game from a rain-out on May 25.) the Indians won the game he played in. overall, he had 1 single, 1 RBI, 1 sac fly, and 1 total base. he also struck out swinging once and left 3 runners on base. furthermore, he had a .250 OBP, .333 SLG, and .583 OPS. in the field, Michael played 9 innings/1 complete game in left and recorded 3 putouts. his RBI was a go-ahead early in the game, so i'll happily take this showing from him.

vs. the Colorado Rockies at Progressive Field, Michael bat .000 (0-for-2) in 1 of the 2 home games in August. (he missed 1 game because he was just placed on the 10-Day DL with a right ankle sprain for the second time this year.) the Indians won the game he played in and lost the game he did not play in. overall, he had 1 left on base. furthermore, his OBP, SLG, and OPS were all .000. in the field, Michael played 4.1 innings in left, leaving early after he sprained his right ankle, and recorded 2 putouts. disappointing series to say the least.

In The Field

in the second half, Michael had 32 putouts, 3 assists, and 1 double play in 35 total chances, giving the left fielder a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.

additionally, Michael played 22 straight games in the outfield without committing an error.

now let's break down the numbers. i am going to document his 2nd Half 2017 #s, the 3rd spot #s, the 4th spot #s, the 9th spot #s, the DH #s, the PH #s, and the PH for DH #s**, as well as the left field #s, the BOP + left field #s, and overall outfield #s.

**because Michael came into a game to PH for the DH, the category "PH for DH" has been added into these stats. his one appearance as the PH for the DH counts for both his PH stats AND DH stats. this happened one other time in Michael's career, back in August 2015, when i initially got familiarized with this concept.

being a PH for the DH complicates a player's stats in terms of adding everything up. if you try to add Michael's OF #s + PH #s + DH #s for the second half, the sum is NOT going to equal his total numbers; you'll be one at bat over his actual total and have an incorrect overall BA. i always add up Michael's #s like that to cross check my calculations. since that doesn't work here, the only way to get an accurate total is to add up his BOP #s (3rd #s + 4th #s + 9th #s). that should clear things up if anyone was confused.

2nd Half 2017 batting average: .284

OBP: .330

SLG: .455

OPS: .784

Michael played in 24 (of 75) games, 15 complete, after the All Star Break.

he started and played left field in 22 games, completing 15 of those games, appearing in 22 total.

he was subbed out defensively in 6 games after playing a total of 43 innings; 5 games after playing a total of 36 innings (7 innings/7 innings/7 innings/8 innings/7 innings per game) because the Indians were winning a blowout and he had done more than enough in the game, and 1 game after 7 innings because the Indians were losing a blowout.

he left 1 game early with a sprained right ankle after playing 4.1 innings.

he came in to PH in 2 games. he came in to PH in the bottom of the 5th inning in 1 game and then was subbed out defensively. he came in to PH in the bottom of the 5th inning in 1 game and then stayed in the game as the DH, which also made him the PH for DH in the game.

he was the DH in 1 game.

he missed 40 games while he was on the 10-Day DL with a right ankle sprain.

he missed 10 games while he was on the 10-Day DL with a more specifically diagnosed deltoid ligament sprain and ankle synovitis.

he got 1 scheduled game off.
