Brantley's 2016 Game-by-Game Numbers & Notes

now it's time to start posting my series of Michael Brantley wrap up blogs. [insert the "but hasn't his season been wrapped up since May 9?" joke here if you must, but i have writing to do regardless.] despite the abnormality that Michael didn't play much in 2016, i'm still going to follow my usual format of splitting everything up in several posts even though the amount of information this year is minor.

the primary focus of this first blog is Michael's game-by-game numbers and notes. however, i have to tell ya, there are more notes than numbers.

Michael had the most injury-riddled season he's ever experienced in the major leagues. it was full of peaks and valleys, progressions and setbacks, smiles and frowns. from opening the 2016 season on the DL, to playing 11 games with the Indians, to suffering right shoulder inflammation/a subacromial impingement and going back on the DL in May, to developing right biceps tendinitis in June, to going out on a minor league rehab assignment in July, to being diagnosed with chronic right biceps tendinitis in August and consequently undergoing season-ending biceps tenodesis (surgery), Michael battled so many challenges. he was basically on a roller coaster ride and, unfortunately, it had a rough ending.

there's no question Michael
tried his absolute best to return to the Tribe this year, adhering to doctors' orders and his rehab program to a T (which was well documented on my blog). ultimately, his bicep pain would not go away and he had no choice other than to alleviate it with a surgery that takes about four months to recover from. it was undoubtedly the right call, albeit a sad one.

and so, Michael played less games in all of this year than he did during his rookie call-up in (just) September 2009. that may not have been something that even seemed possible, but it's happened. i mean, who could have known that Michael would never come off the DL when he was placed on it again in May? better yet, who could have known that after he recovered from his offseason labral tear surgery, he'd end up with another issue that would essentially wipe out his whole season? i bet he's more anxious than ever for time to fly so he can get out to Goodyear, Arizona, participate in a regular spring training, and play ball in 2017.

until then, let's take a look back at the handful of games that he did play in 2016.

Michael played in 11 of 161* games this season and had a hit in 6 of the 11 games that he played. he had no significant hitting streaks in 2016.

(*1 game in September was postponed due to rain. MLB rescheduled it for the day after the regular season ended, but it was only to be played if the game would have any postseason implications. because the Indians won and the Boston Red Sox lost on the final day of the regular season, that secured the Indians home field advantage in the ALDS, AND also because the Detroit Tigers lost and were eliminated from the AL Wild Card race on the final day of the regular season, the PPD game became unnecessary and was officially cancelled.)

Michael reached base safely in 7 games. he had one very modest five-game on-base streak, which occurred during a homestand.

Michael started and completed 10 games. he played 11 games in the outfield, starting and completing 10 games.

he played left field in all 11 games, totaling 89.1 innings. as the left fielder, he started and completed 10 games. he was a defensive switch into left field in 1 game and played 1 inning after a PH appearance.

Michael was a PH in 1 game.

Michael missed 150 games in 2016.

he missed 148 games due to injury. Michael missed 77 games in the first half of 2016 and he missed all 73 games in the second half. he missed 145 games while on the disabled list, 64 games while on the 15-Day DL and 81 games while on the 60-Day DL.

he missed the first 16 games of the year because he was on the 15-Day DL continuing to rehab from his offseason shoulder surgery and out on a minor league rehab assignment. once he returned to game action and played for a bit, he missed 3 games due to right shoulder fatigue. following that, he missed 48 games when he went back on the 15-Day DL and sustained a myriad of injuries including right shoulder inflammation, a subacromial impingement, and right biceps tendinitis.

he missed 29 games after he was transferred to the 60-Day DL while still dealing with right biceps tendinitis and was either out on a rehab assignment (missing 3 games), shut down, recovering from a hydrodissection procedure, or working his way back. then he missed 6 games while still on the 60-Day DL in the wake of being diagnosed with chronic right biceps tendinitis. lastly, he missed the final 46 games of the regular season due to having season-ending biceps tenodesis (surgery) for his chronic biceps tendinitis.

Michael had 2 scheduled off days.

defensively, Michael did the best he could in what little time he spent in the outfield this year. he managed to flash some impeccable defense with a few extraordinary catches while playing exclusively in left field. overall, Michael recorded 18 putouts and 1 outfield assist and had a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in 2016. going into next season, he will have a streak of 30 games in the outfield without committing an error.

note: when you scroll down now to Michael's game lines, you will see that there's not much specific day-to-day information about him while he was on the disabled list throughout the season. in the past, i have included health news/progressions in the game lines in the form of game notes. but this year, because i was writing monthly blogs that contained very detailed DL updates, i didn't see a need to do that.

therefore, if you want to know when a particular event occurred, such as his cortisone shots or hydrodissection, you can revisit these blogs:
