Brantley Transferred to 60-Day DL (w/ DL Updates) (My 200th Blog!)

this morning, on July 3, it was announced in a press release on indians.com that Michael Brantley was transferred from the 15-Day DL to the 60-Day DL in order to make room for Abraham Almonte--who was just reinstated from the restricted list--on the 40-man roster. this was only a paper move and does not change anything per a tweet from Jordan Bastian. Terry Francona also commented, "there's no hidden flags there." Michael's new placement on the disabled list is still retroactive to May 9, and he's eligible for activation on July 9 according to Bastian's indians.com article. however, Michael is still a ways away from returning.

this all originated from the offseason right shoulder surgery Michael had on November 9, 2015 for a torn labrum. he's been doing everything he can to recover, rehab, and make a comeback, but has faced some obstacles along the way. he played two games in spring training with the Tribe before experiencing some shoulder soreness and was shut down for the rest of Cactus League play. he was later placed on the 15-Day DL prior to the start of the season. soon after the season opened, Michael was able to go out on a minor league rehab assignment with both the Columbus Clippers and Akron RubberDucks and was activated from the DL on April 25.

Michael played in a total of 11 games with the Indians before he began
dealing with shoulder fatigue and eventually had to be put on the 15-Day DL once again, this time with right shoulder inflammation. that move occurred on May 14, yet was backdated to May 9. since then, Michael has attempted to rest and build his hitting program back up, from hitting off a tee to taking soft toss/flip toss in the cage, but unfortunately has run into more problems. first, there were rumors that Michael was going to miss significant time (which i always thought were bogus). shortly following that, Michael was shut down for a bit because he received a cortisone shot for right biceps tendinitis. he's now currently back to hitting, though it's unclear just exactly what he's doing at this particular time.

we're only three days into July and i've already heard some [conflicting] updates about Michael this month. see for yourself:

July 1: during the radio broadcast of the Indians game, Jim Rosenhaus told WTAM 1100 listeners that Michael advanced to overhand batting practice today with good intensity and he had a good response. Rosey reported that news from the Indians medical staff in his Novacare Rehabilitation injury report.

July 2: the Indians are cautiously hopeful about Michael returning in the next few weeks according to Terry Pluto's morning Terry's Talkin' article on cleveland.com. they believe they'll have a much better idea about his comeback from shoulder surgery during the All Star break (July 11-14).

then in the middle of the afternoon game, Rosey's Novacare Rehabilitation injury report revealed that Indians assistant GM Derek Falvey was on their road trip and remarked things are looking very promising for Michael. he's taking full batting practice on the field now and they're very encouraged by what they have seen in the last couple of days. Michael's come through the batting practice activities in good shape.

July 3: this is where some confusion sets in. Bastian tweeted that Michael is on target to advance to BP this week, and that he still needs to go through BP and a rehab assignment before he can be activated. also, in Bastian's article on indians.com, Terry Francona expressed, "he's doing very well" but that there's no firm timetable for his return.

on the contrary, during the Tribe game, Rosey repeated the same news from yesterday in his Novacare Rehabilitation injury report--that Falvey said Michael has been taking batting practice on the field.

either way, whether he's doing full BP or not, things are finally looking good for Michael and i believe we'll see him on a minor league rehab assignment after the All Star break.
